Andrew picked up on the first ring.
“Mr. Packman.” His tone was polite, a smile practically audible. “Congrats. Ms. Sadinton is officially single now—you finally have your shot.”
Ryan’s response came slow and cool, a hint of amusement curling at the edge of his voice. “So you think all these years I held back from chasing Amelia just because she wasn’t single?”
Andrew’s smile faltered. Sweat pricked at his hairline. There was no good way to answer that.
He liked to think of himself as a bit of a rule-breaker, someone who could toe the line and get away with it. But Ryan? He didn’t even see the line. Laws, morals, other people’s opinions—none of it ever seemed to matter to him.
Honestly, it made sense. With Ryan’s personality, if he wanted Amelia, he’d either be the side guy for her or just take what he wanted. Waiting patiently for years? That wasn’t his style.
There was really only one explanation.
Andrew’s grin faded for good, replaced by a rush of shock and a prick of dread. The distance between Ryan and Amelia was never about anyone else. It was Amelia who called the shots. The only person Ryan ever cared about or respected was her.
He hadn’t been waiting for her divorce. He’d been waiting for her to let him in, for her feelings to change.
The realization made Andrew suck in a sharp breath. Ryan was dangerous. He was so obsessed he could actually wait.
“Amelia still has things at Cloudcrest. Go get them for her.” Ryan’s voice was calm, almost casual, but it was clear there was no room for argument.
Andrew hesitated. “Mr. Packman, I’m not sure I can manage that alone—”
Ryan cut him off. “Look out your window.”
Andrew glanced outside. Suddenly, both sides of his car were lined with sleek black sedans, a dozen or more, shadowing him like a silent escort.
