Karma Doesn’t Sleep: The Revenge Queen Rises novel Chapter 536

Night had fallen, quiet and heavy, the darkness wrapping around the city like a thick blanket. Along the riverbank, searchlights swept across the water, lighting everything up so bright it almost looked like daytime out there.

Shane wiped sweat from his forehead. Suddenly, the deep thump of helicopter blades cut through the air. He looked up and froze when he saw several helicopters circling low, their camouflage paint gleaming under the searchlights.

“Wait, aren’t those military helicopters?” he muttered, squinting at the markings. When he caught the insignia, his jaw dropped. The Baker family.

His coworker gaped. “No way. Did the Bakers really send military choppers to help us search? Only Ryan Packman could call in that kind of favor.”

Thinking about it, Shane realized it actually made sense. In Alson Creek, the only family that could really stand up to the Packmans was the Bakers. When big families like that needed to help each other out, they didn’t hesitate.

He took a deep breath and shouted to rally his exhausted team. “Come on, everyone. Let’s keep searching. Don’t give up now!”

He glanced anxiously down at the raging river. Just downstream, a brutal waterfall waited, hidden in the darkness. If Amelia and Ryan had been swept over that, their chances of surviving were almost zero.

On the other side of the moonlit water, by the thick woods, two soaked figures lay sprawled under the cold, pale light.

Amelia coughed hard, water burning her lungs as she slowly blinked her eyes open. She spat out mouthfuls of river water and finally managed to catch her breath.

She was alive.

Relief washed over her for all of two seconds before panic hit. Ryan.

She twisted around, frantically searching. Then, in the ghostly light, she spotted him just a few steps away.

She tried to call his name, but her voice was barely more than a hoarse whisper.

Forcing herself to get up, Amelia felt her soaked clothes dragging her down, heavy and freezing, like she was trapped in a cage. There were only ten meters between them, but every step felt impossible. She stumbled twice, scraping her hands on sharp rocks until warm blood ran down her fingers.

The pain jolted her back to life. She pushed through, crawling the last stretch until she finally reached Ryan’s side.

“Ryan…”

He was lying there, eyes closed, drenched hair stuck to his forehead. Under the moon, his face looked almost see-through, so pale he could disappear at any second.

Fear crashed over her. She pressed her fingers to his neck, desperate for a pulse. It was there, but so faint she could barely feel it.

She had no idea where the strength came from. She started CPR, counting out compressions, mouth to mouth, praying he’d come back.

At first, she managed to hold it together, but as the minutes dragged on with no sign of life, her panic grew.

“Ryan, wake up!” Her voice cracked, thick with tears she hadn’t even realized were falling. “Didn’t you say you liked me? Didn’t you say you wanted to chase me? What are you doing lying here? This isn’t funny!”
