Did she really not realize how much she was scaring Penny right now?
Caroline and Mrs. Salmeron had no clue what was actually going on—they just saw the chaos and immediately assumed Amelia was faking it, acting like the victim, and that Clive was only backing her up to save face.
“Amelia, that’s enough! Stop making a scene.” Caroline rolled her eyes, looking like she couldn’t stand another second of it.
Amelia didn’t even try to defend herself. She just set the phone down calmly and turned. “Tara.”
Caught off guard, Tara froze for a second, then hurried forward. “Yes, ma’am? Do you need something?”
Mrs. Salmeron had only brought Tara here to keep an eye on things, just in case the rest of the family tried to gang up on Amelia. Tara still didn’t really understand what was happening, but when she saw Amelia needed help, she knew she had to step up.
Amelia said quietly, “Could you call the police for me?”
“No one is calling the police,” Clive cut in, his voice suddenly sharp.
Tara hesitated, looking helpless. The truth was, even if she wanted to, she couldn’t call the police—her phone was still connected, with Mrs. Salmeron secretly listening in.
Clive stared at Amelia, completely thrown. “Amelia, do you even know what you’re saying?”
Why was she insisting on bringing the police into this? Did she really want to scare her own daughter like that? Just because she hadn’t raised Penny, did she have to be this cold?
She was only five. Just the thought of it made her start to shake all over, tears spilling down her cheeks before she could stop them.
Clive was just about to say something, his head pounding from his mother’s constant nagging, when Penny’s wobbly, tear-filled voice broke in.
“No!”
That one word hit Amelia straight in the heart.
“Don’t call the police…” Penny’s big eyes were brimming with tears, her nose red, her little hands twisting her dress as she looked from her grandma to her dad, scared and desperate. “Grandma, Daddy… please, don’t let the police come…”
