Clive gave a lazy laugh and leaned back in his seat, watching Liana through the open window.
Maybe it was his age or his status—or just the way both made him feel untouchable. Right in that moment, Clive looked at Liana the way a god might gaze down at a willing offering. Her fate, whatever it was, was in his hands.
Liana waited, nerves twisting in her stomach, until finally his voice broke the silence—a little rough, a little drunk, and completely relaxed.
“You sure you want to give me a ride?”
“Yes!” she answered without blinking.
“Anywhere I want to go?”
“…Anywhere you want.”
She wasn’t shy about wanting more out of life. Ambition burned in her, and if the chance to climb higher showed up, she’d be stupid not to grab it.
Clive closed his eyes with a small, knowing smile. “Alright. Get in.”
Her heart finally dropped back into place, but it was still pounding. She slid into the driver’s seat, hands tight on the steering wheel of this crazy expensive car.
“So, Salmeron, where to?”
She kept her tone light, acting like they were in this together, not just doing him a favor.
Clive cracked his eyes open just enough to catch her in the rearview. That one look felt like he could see right through her, and she gripped the wheel even tighter.
He knew what she was doing, but honestly, he kind of liked it—her pretending to be clever, just enough for him to catch on, but never trying to outsmart him.
If only Amelia had figured that out… Would things have turned out differently?
Clive let his eyes fall shut again. “Just drive for now.”
“Okay.”
Liana pulled out smoothly, sneaking looks at him here and there. He had his eyes closed, cheeks flushed—looked almost asleep.
Suddenly, he spoke up, making her jump a little.
“You drive well.”
“Thanks.” She smiled. “I do some freelance driving on the side. Pays alright, and it’s flexible.”
Clive opened his eyes. “You that hard up for cash?”
“I just want to make money,” she said honestly. “A lot of it.”
He seemed interested now, shifting to get more comfortable. “How much is a lot?”
She didn’t hesitate. “Ten million.”
Clive laughed. “Ambitious. I like that.”
Liana was about to reply, but just then his phone started ringing. She clammed up, reading the room.
He answered and put the call on speaker.
Liana played along, pretending to take him seriously. “Well, that’d make you my boss, Salmeron. A pretty generous one.”
He didn’t say anything back, so she just kept driving. Somewhere along the way, she spotted a familiar card tucked into a corner of the console.
She glanced at Clive—still had his eyes closed—then quietly pulled it out.
Her library card. The one she’d left in his car.
She’d hoped he’d bring it back to her at the university, but he never showed. She figured he’d just tossed it, and tried to forget about it.
But he hadn’t brought it back, and he hadn’t thrown it away either.
Liana slid the card back where she’d found it, acting like she hadn’t seen a thing.
They arrived and she parked in the underground garage.
She got out first, circled around, and opened the back door for him.
“We’re here, Salmeron.”
“Thank you.”
He pulled out a few hundred-dollar bills and handed them to her, then started walking away.
Liana hesitated, then caught up to him. “Salmeron, I… I lost my library card. Have you seen it by any chance?”
Clive looked at her, his eyes dark and deep. He smiled, slow and a little dangerous. “It’s upstairs. Dare to come up and get it?”
