Chapter 223 Protest

“The hospital had us join Mrs. Lidell Senior’s surgery, but they never said who would lead it. With odds that low, who on earth took the case?” Henry Ross muttered.

“No idea. I’m curious, too. Other than Dr. Gales’ mentee, who could even try?” James Perry

asked.

“Hey, are you on our team?” Martin Hale asked, looking straight at Nancy.

Nancy looked up, saw her assistants arrive, and nodded. “Since everyone’s here, let me introduce myself. I’m the lead surgeon for Mrs. Lidell Senior’s operation. Let’s give this everything we’ve got.”

Silence fell over the conference room.

Then, Martin laughed. “You’re kidding, right? Are you even 22 years old?”

“Yeah, you almost had me there,” James added.

“I’m not joking,” Nancy said, looking at them seriously. “I’m Nancy Moore, the lead surgeon for this procedure. This is my surgical plan.”

She handed out a copy of the plan to each assistant.

As they scanned the pages, they realized she wasn’t joking. Their expressions stiffened, giving way to a mess of disbelief and unease.

Bernard Whitaker, the oldest surgeon at the table, hardened his face into cold indifference.” So, Boraska Hospital really has declined so badly. Putting a novice in charge? I don’t have time for games. I’m out!”

He stood and walked straight out.

The others traded looks.

“Is anyone else planning to withdraw?” Nancy asked, completely unruffled.

They glanced at one another, then began to rise from their seats one by one.

“Sorry. I’m not risking my name on a surgery that’s doomed to fail,” Martin said.

With that, they walked out of the room.

The surgeons who stayed didn’t dare go against the hospital’s orders. Some sat with furrowed brows, concern clear on their faces.

“Alright, it’s just us now. Let’s go over the plan,” Nancy said as she walked to the board.

She guided them through each step, her voice calm and methodical.

Slowly, the worry on their faces eased.

This plan didn’t look like it came from a rookie. At that moment, she came across as a seasoned surgeon.

“Dr. Moore, may I ask if you devised this plan yourself?” James asked.

“Strictly speaking, I worked it out with Dr. Gales,” Nancy replied.

“Dr. Gales? Are you close with him?” James pressed, then blinked as a thought formed in his mind. “Wait… Are you his mentee?”

Nancy nodded, admitting the truth.

Several hands pressed to chests while jaws dropped in shock.

They now understood why the hospital had assigned them as assistants.

Since she was Benny’s mentee, the odds of success leaped by bounds. Anyone in that operating room would share the win.

Excitement swept the table.

Meanwhile, the group that had walked out of the conference room, led by Bernard, headed to the director’s office to protest.

“Are you sure you want to withdraw? This is your last chance,” the director, Kaden Benton, asked, giving them all a meaningful look.

Bernard sneered. He figured Kaden was bluffing because no one wanted to be put on this team. “I’ve made up my mind. Mr. Benton, you don’t need to say more.”

“Alright, then. I’ll grant your request,” Kaden said with a sigh. “Just don’t regret it.”

“Of course I won’t.” Bernard scoffed.

Out in the hallway, Martin frowned. “Why did Mr. Benton say it like that? Do you think this surgery will actually succeed?”

“Not a chance! He’s just annoyed that we quit,” Bernard said with a snort. “If this surgery succeeds, I’ll eat my hat!”
