Chapter 199
The kiss lingered, stubbornly refusing to end.
Wren’s lips were relentless against hers, hungry and insistent. “Zozo, you really can’t bear to hurt me, can you? That means you still love me.”
His low, sultry whispers grazed her ear.
She shoved him away with force. “Enough! Is this supposed to be fun for you?”
He sucked in a ragged breath, his eyes blazing at her. “Don’t go looking for other men. If you do, I’ll just find
someone too!”
Zoya frowned. Right now, Wren’s face was shadowed with rage and obsession.
It instantly reminded her of all those stories about the Richmond family’s “crazy one.”
If they really clashed head-on, God only knew what he’d end up doing.
She brushed her lips with the back of her hand, still tingling from his kiss, then shot Wren a defiant glare. “Okay, your birthday’s done. We ate the cake, and I’m outta here!”
‘Anyway, give it some time and he’ll have no choice but to accept we’re finished,’ she told herself.
As she spun around and strode toward the entryway, Wren’s voice rang out behind her. “Zozo, don’t forget what I just said. I mean it. I always follow through.”
The only reply was the sharp slam of the door in his face.
Wren clenched his jaw and slowly pulled off his shirt.
On his abdomen, a sharply colored bruise bloomed-the mark left by her punch earlier.
Absurdly enough, he found himself treasuring even the pain she’d dealt him, as if the wound itself was another way she had touched him.
His fingers gently skimmed over the bruise before his lips brushed the bracelet on his wrist.
“Zozo, I refuse to accept this breakup!” he declared.

The next morning at work, Eowyn leaned in close to Zoya and murmured, “So, what happened with Wren after I left last night? He didn’t pull anything weird, right?”
Honestly, when Wren showed up at the private lounge yesterday, he had that kind of crazy, unpredictable energy that made you worry he might snap at any moment.
“Oh, I just went to his apartment and had some cake. That’s all,” Zoya shrugged, acting like it was no big deal.
But without warning, the memory of that kiss he stole from her last night flashed through her mind.
At least Wren was right about one thing-she still loved him. If she really didn’t, she wouldn’t have hesitated yesterday; she would’ve kept hitting him until he finally let go.
Feelings weren’t something she could just turn off at will.
She wasn’t nearly as nonchalant as she acted.
But honestly, she knew there was just no way she could be with Wren right now.
“Seriously, the way Wren was acting yesterday? No way does he look like he’s ready to break up with you,” Eowyn said. “And when I mentioned finding you a new guy, I swear, his glare could’ve murdered me on the spot!”
“He’ll have to accept it sooner or later. And really, skip the matchmaking, Okay? I’m not interested-and my schedule’s packed anyway,” Zoya replied.
“Honestly, I doubt I’ll even have to step in,” Eowyn muttered to herself. ‘With Zozo and Wren officially done, bet no one’s more hyped than Harvey right now,’ she thought.
Yesterday after Zozo left, Harvey had already pulled her aside and warned her not to hook Zozo up with any
guys.
“But seriously, can you really just drop this whole thing?” Eowyn asked, her voice full of concern.
“I can,” Zoya said, sounding more certain than she felt. “If I managed to completely get over Nicolas before, of course I can eventually let go of Wren too.”

“But Nicolas was a cheater—a guy like that is easy to leave behind. Wren’s different. He loves you like crazy. I swear, if you’d ditched him on his birthday last night, it would’ve shattered him,” Eowyn insisted.
Eowyn paused for a second, then pressed, “Are you sure there isn’t any chance you two could work things out?”
“How do you fix things when all the trust is gone?” Zoya replied. ‘Not to mention, there’s my brother standing between me and Wren,’ she thought.
Eowyn put the pieces together. ‘So Wren really did something that shattered Zozo’s trust in him,’ she thought.
“Alright, enough about my mess. Spill-what’s up with you and Leon?” Zoya asked, genuinely concerned.
Eowyn couldn’t help feeling a twinge of guilt. “Seriously, nothing’s going on.”
Zoya pressed her, “Then how come he was tagging along with Harvey at the bar?” ‘Something’s definitely weird here, she thought.
Eowyn smirked. “He wants me to give him another shot, but you know I’m not one for exes-after all these years apart, why bother looking back?” ‘No way am I going down that road again,’ she thought.
She remembered how last night at the bar, after Harvey left, she couldn’t stand letting good booze go to waste
so she and Leon just kept drinking together.
But she would never have thought that she’d wake up this morning to find herself in the same bed as Leon.
The memory of opening her eyes and seeing Leon lying right next to her? It was like getting hit by a truck totally out of nowhere.
Alcohol always leads to trouble!’ Eowyn groaned to herself.
‘Next time, no way I’m touching another drop,’ she promised herself.
When Leon left that morning, he couldn’t hide how sour his mood was.
But since both of them were still fully dressed, she figured nothing inappropriate had happened-at least, she hoped not.
Either way, she swore to herself-never, ever would she go drinking with Leon again!
“Hey, Eowyn, why are you blushing like that?” Zoya teased, her voice cutting through Eowyn’s daze.
Eowyn jumped, flustered. “W… what? It’s nothing, seriously!”
‘Nope, I’m just gonna pretend none of that ever happened-total blackout,’ she insisted to herself.
Just then, Zoya’s phone buzzed. She glanced at the caller ID-Harvey.
“Hey, Zozo, you got time tonight? Yesterday, you were gone in a flash; we barely talked! How about we grab dinner?” Harvey asked.
“Sure,” Zoya said. ‘Works for me-I’ve actually got some legal stuff I need Harvey’s advice on,’ she thought.
“Awesome, see you tonight. Got any restaurant in mind?” Harvey asked.
“Anywhere’s fine, as long as it’s not too far,” Zoya replied.
