Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 280

Elm Estates.

Amelia put Ruby to bed early, and after switching off the living room lights, Ashley was just about to head to her room when the doorbell rang.

She walked over and glanced at the security screen, surprised by who she saw.

“Mr. Campbell? What brings you here?”

Daniel leaned against the door, peering into the living room. “Where’s Amelia?”

“She’s already asleep.”

“Wake her up. I need to talk to her.”

Ashley didn’t move. “Sir, maybe you could wait until tomorrow. She’s exhausted, working full-time and looking after Ruby.”

Daniel frowned. “Didn’t take long for you to switch sides, did it?”

Ashley stood her ground. “You’re the one who said Mrs. Campbell always comes first. Besides, I think she’s starting to get suspicious. If I blow my cover, you’ll lose your only source of intel—and that wouldn’t do either of us any good, would it, sir?”

Daniel was left speechless, standing outside his own house, blocked by the very person he’d planted as his eyes and ears.

The next morning, Ashley woke up early to go grocery shopping. She opened the door and nearly jumped—Daniel was standing outside, looking like he’d been there a while.

“Sir… did you not go home last night?”

Daniel wasn’t that far gone. He’d gone back, showered, caught a few hours of sleep, and returned before dawn.

“Is Amelia awake yet?” he asked.

“She’s off work today. She’ll probably sleep in.”

As Ashley went to close the door, Daniel pressed his palm against it. “I’ll just wait inside, then.”

Ashley didn’t budge. “Be careful, sir. You’re going to blow your cover.”

Reluctantly, Daniel let go.

About half an hour later, the elevator made a noise. Daniel assumed Ashley was back, but didn’t bother to check—he kept one hand in his pocket, staring out the window at the sunny sky. It was a beautiful day, perfect for a picnic. Maybe he could take Amelia and Ruby out somewhere, just the three of them.

The thought had barely finished forming when the doorbell rang again. Ashley had a fingerprint lock—why would she ring?

Just then, the door opened, and Amelia’s elegant face appeared.

“You’re here,” she said, her tone as casual as if she were greeting an old friend.

Daniel felt a pang in his chest, pushing past Robert. “Amelia, why haven’t you answered my calls?”

“Why should I?” Amelia looked him straight in the eye. “Are you ready to get divorced? If you are, I might consider picking up.”

All the words Daniel had prepared went out the window. “You couldn’t have told me what you wanted for breakfast? Did you really need an outsider to bring it?”

Amelia ignored him, holding the door open. “Come on in,” she said—to Robert.

Daniel’s jaw tightened. “Aren’t you going to invite me in?”

But he didn’t wait for an answer, squeezing past her into the apartment. “I’m coming in too.”

“Daniel!” Amelia tried to stop him, but blocking a man nearly six foot three was pointless. “You know this is technically trespassing, right?”

“Oh, you want to talk about legalities?” Daniel fixed his gaze on Robert, practically burning a hole in his back. “We’re still married. That means half of everything in this place is mine. So tell me—how is it trespassing if I’m coming into my own home?”
