Violet pulled out her phone from her bag. The HR manager gave a mocking little laugh. “Going to call Mr. Campbell, are you? Fine, I’ll wait right here. Let’s see if he’s in the mood to save you.”
Swallowing her pride, Violet dialed Daniel’s number right in front of her. Once. Twice. Three times. Each call went unanswered.
The flush on her cheeks faded into an ugly shade of green.
The HR manager smirked. “All done with your performance? If so, pack your things and finish your exit paperwork.”
Violet almost choked on her own anger. After signing the termination documents, she hugged a cardboard box to her chest and headed downstairs. On the ground floor, she spotted Amelia, who was there for a project meeting with IntelliQuip.
Violet, looking for all the world like a stray dog just tossed out into the street, was a stark contrast to Amelia—poised, confident, and immaculately dressed for business.
Amelia paused beside her. “This is just the beginning.”
Violet, already fuming with nowhere to vent, felt her rage boil over at those words. She gritted her teeth. “So it was you pulling the strings.”
“If you hadn’t started this, I wouldn’t have needed to fight back. You tried your tricks on me, fine—I could have let that go. But you never should have threatened my daughter. Violet, you’ll never truly understand the lengths a mother will go to protect her child.”
With that, Amelia brushed past her, bumping Violet’s shoulder as she strode forward.
Thrown off balance, Violet stumbled and dropped her box. The contents spilled everywhere, scattering across the floor.
She burned with the urge to confront Amelia, but by the time she looked up, Amelia had already stepped into the elevator. The doors slid shut, blocking Violet’s furious gaze.
People were coming and going in the lobby, and Violet had no desire to make a bigger spectacle of herself. Hastily, she gathered up her scattered things and hurried out of the building.
She had barely climbed into her car when her phone rang—a number she didn’t recognize.
“Ms. Scott, this is the attorney representing Mrs. Campbell. We have accepted the case regarding your unauthorized disposal of jointly owned marital assets. Please return the property within the next two weeks, or we will proceed with legal action.”
The assistant smiled politely. “He’ll be right with you.”
Just then, a sleek Maybach pulled up in front of IntelliQuip’s main doors. Daniel stepped out, phone pressed to his ear as he wrapped up what sounded like a crucial call. He instructed his deputy to take over the rest of the meeting; he’d listen in remotely.
His assistant watched him with a knowing look. If Mr. Campbell was rushing over here like a man on a mission, something big must be going on.
But then Daniel paused outside the conference room, checked his reflection in his phone, and frowned at his hair. He let out a little huff, smoothed it down, and turned to his assistant. “How do I look?”
The assistant kept a straight face. “Very sharp, sir.”
Only then did Daniel seem satisfied, pushing the door open.
Peeking inside, the assistant finally understood. No wonder the boss was acting like a peacock on parade—Mrs. Campbell was here at IntelliQuip.

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
