Her coworker squeezed Amelia’s hand so hard that she nearly choked on her water. Glancing up, she saw the director suddenly appear out of nowhere, barreling toward the handsome man her coworker had just pointed out—like a cannonball aimed straight at its target.
The man stood out from the crowd in a light gray suit, every strand of hair perfectly styled, carrying himself with the kind of effortless elegance that made the people around him look like background extras.
“Mr. Campbell!” The director practically vibrated with excitement as he shook Daniel’s hand. “I thought your schedule would be too packed. You should have let us know you were coming!”
Daniel was tall, a good half a head above the director, who even standing directly in front of him couldn’t block his view.
Daniel’s deep, expressive eyes looked right past the director’s balding head, a wry smile playing at the corners of his mouth.
Amelia’s coworker was losing her mind. “Oh my god, is he actually flirting with us?”
Amelia, apparently immune to whatever charms were at work, immediately looked away and started to walk off.
She’d barely taken a step when the director called out, “Amelia! You and Mr. Campbell know each other, right? Come over—why don’t you give him a rundown on the latest in commercial aviation technology?”
Forcing a steadying breath, Amelia slipped into her professional demeanor, her smile perfectly polite as she turned back.
Daniel and the director were already approaching. Daniel glanced down at her with a look that seemed friendly but, if you looked closer, carried a silent rebuke. He smiled amiably. “Chief Amelia doesn’t seem all that thrilled about playing host.”
The director rushed to cover for her. “Not at all! Amelia heads up the IntelliQuip project. She and Mr. Campbell have worked together before, so she’s not bothering with all the formalities.”
He shot Amelia a meaningful look—be a little more welcoming, will you?
Trapped under the director’s watchful eye, Amelia stretched her smile wider, turning on the full hospitality treatment. “Mr. Campbell, is there anywhere you’d like to start?”
Daniel’s gaze lingered on her forced smile. “Let’s start from the very beginning.”

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
