Love Me Back (Amelia and Daniel) novel Chapter 394

The reporter blinked, momentarily speechless. Was that... a bit much? For once, the wordsmith couldn’t even find the right adjective.

Amelia hadn’t expected Daniel to pull one of his stunts even during a straightforward interview. She wanted to glare at him, but with the reporter still present, she had no choice but to swallow her irritation.

The reporter’s smile masked her awkwardness. “Chief Amelia’s excellence is plain for all to see. Mrs. Campbell must be just as outstanding. Mr. Campbell, how did you and your wife fall in love?”

Daniel gazed out the window at the dazzling blue sky, as if recalling something precious. A smile crept onto his lips. “Love at first sight. We fell for each other freely. She was my first love.”

Amelia nearly choked. First love, my ass. Did he even know what that meant?

She lifted her hand and, as if by accident, knocked over her glass of water. The spill landed right on her pants, soaking a patch of fabric.

“Oops. Sorry, spilled water on my pants—excuse me, I need to take care of this.”

If she stayed any longer, she was afraid she’d end up throwing water at Daniel’s face instead of her own leg.

After drying the damp spot on her pants, Daniel’s interview finally wrapped up. The staff in the lounge busied themselves, no one noticing exactly when Amelia slipped away from the sofa.

Daniel caught up with her, tugging her into a small lounge room. As soon as the door clicked shut, the space shrank—just the two of them.

“Were you so moved by me calling you my first love that you couldn’t even hold your glass steady?”

He boxed her in against the wall, his lips curled in mockery. “Mr. Campbell, did you flunk English class? If you don’t know what ‘first love’ means, maybe look it up in a dictionary.”

He heaved a sigh, his gaze dropping, puppy-eyed and pitiful. “You really don’t trust me? That hurts, you know.”

“Not enough to kill you, apparently.” She turned her face away. “You can use ‘trust’ as an excuse for anything, can’t you?”

Daniel’s voice softened. “Think about it—my first kiss, my first night, both were with you. Wouldn’t that make you my first love?”

Amelia shot him a frosty look. “Your first kiss? What, every time you wipe your mouth, you reset the counter?”

Daniel paused, then burst out laughing—a deep, chesty laugh that vibrated through her where he leaned in, even through the thin fabric of her shirt.

He dropped his voice, low and rough. “I just wanted to make you happy.”

Amelia’s mind went blank—then she lashed out with her foot, not even sure where she connected. She heard Daniel hiss in pain and caught a glimpse of him doubled over.

“Damn, you don’t hold back, do you? Now I’m really as pure as they come.”

The words sent a wave of panic through her. Without looking back, she yanked open the door and fled.

After that little incident, Amelia felt guilty and jittery for days, convinced Daniel would pop up at any moment demanding payback for the fate of poor Little Campbell.
