When Amelia came to, it was already dark outside.
Her neck ached, her head felt like a block of lead, and as she tried to sit up and rub her temples, she realized her hands and feet were tied.
Slowly, she managed to sit upright, scanning her surroundings.
She was inside an abandoned shipping container, the floor littered with trash—discarded food wrappers, empty bottles, the debris of someone else’s life. There was only one small window, barely big enough to peer through. She couldn’t tell where she was, only that night had fallen—thick, suffocating darkness.
She edged closer to the metal frame of the cot, hoping she could work the ropes against one of the sharp corners.
Just then, the door swung open. A man in a baseball cap strode inside.
Amelia lifted her gaze. The lower half of his face was marred by a jagged scar, and his cold, reptilian eyes were the last thing she remembered before blacking out. The pieces snapped together in her mind.
Him?!
She instinctively shrank back onto the cot, bracing herself.
Samuel dragged a battered chair over and sat down across from her, propping one ankle on his knee. “Daniel’s been awfully protective of you. If it weren’t for the mess at today’s press conference, I wouldn’t have had the chance.”
Amelia drew a deep breath, forcing calm into her voice. “Daniel was at the press conference too. You had the nerve to kidnap me right under his nose? You must really have a death wish.”
Samuel let out a humorless laugh. “Maybe I do. I’ve got nothing left to lose. If I’m going down, I might as well take a few people with me.”

“What did you do to him?”
Samuel tutted mockingly. “Well, well, I didn’t expect you to care so much. Weren’t you desperate for a divorce? Why so worried about your soon-to-be ex-husband?”
Panic coiled inside her, icy and electric. She forced herself to breathe. “You’re insane. If you’ve really taken Daniel, all hell will break loose in Silkwood.”
Samuel shrugged, utterly unfazed. “Let it burn. I won’t be around after tonight anyway.”

His sick, possessive gaze swept over her face. “Don’t worry, I’ll make sure you’re comfortable. Every single day, in every way you can imagine.”

How come in every novel I read on here the women don’t tell the men they are the father of their child? I find this ridiculous....
