Chapter 139: _ Taking A Big Step

As Rhett watched her go, a faint call to order from in front of the investigation room caused him to turn his gaze to meet Farkas standing by the door.

"Heard that?" Rhett asked him without delay.

Farkas shut his eyes and nodded simultaneously. "I did, Rhett."

"So what do you think?" Rhett was already walking toward his office while Farkas followed behind.

Farkas sighed heavily. "I have been wondering what could have been killing those victims. I think I have my best bet now."

Farkas was a military advisor but he could also have a sharp detective skill. Rhett hadn’t thought of that, but he knew he had suspected those bite marks and style of killing in those victims to be that of a vampire.

However, the fact that vampires couldn’t drink wolf blood continued to kill that hypothesis. If there was a special vampire who was ancient and powerful enough to blend in the pack without getting noticed, he’d be hungry for sure at a point.

"Definitely, those killings..." Rhett breathed, turning to Farkas with fascination and genuinely glad that there was a silver lining behind this dark mishap that had befallen their pack.

"Might be his/her doing. There’s a high chance." Farlas finished for Rhett with a smile. "I think we’re finally making progress here, Rhett."

Rhett was about to agree to that when an epiphany hit him. Didn’t this just make it all complicated? How on earth would they locate this ancient vampire in their midst since he had blended so well that he’d had them all fooled all along?

Farkas noticed the change in his demeanor. "What’s wrong, Rhett?" He asked.

"I feel like this means we are to embark on a wild goose chase after this. How in the moon’s name are we to find this ancient vampire now? The fact that we are up against an ancient vampire even means we’re not ready for what’s coming. Look at us, weakened, we don’t have enough men and our pack is disoriented." Rhett pointed out, pocketing his hands.

Instead of the seriousness he expected from Farkas, his friend merely rolled his eyes. "You just can’t cut yourself some slack, Rhett, can you? It’s like you’re allergic to reveling in a minute of little wins."

"And you take everything carefreely, Farkas. There’s no time to celebrate wins that aren’t there. We lost men, lost families, and properties, and now found out that there is an even bigger threat than we thought and you speak of celebration? Celebrate what? Where’s the win? You mean LOSES?!" Rhett roared, unable to contain his anger and grief as they all came out in that bellow.

It called the attention of every soldier within range and paralyzed Farkas who rapidly batted his lashes like a girl dressed in a pink ball gown. frёeωebɳovel.com

Rhett, knowing he had overreacted could only clench his fists, grimace, and walk away, ignoring all the eyes on him and Farkas’s shock.

He went into his office, and sat with his head buried in his hands as every emotion he had been trying to bury ran to him in quick succession.

The creaking of the door announced Farkas’s arrival but Rhett didn’t even accord him a single glance as he remained in his worrying position.
