While I and Lupe talked about other things, I mentioned how I’d felt during sex with Rhett. I explained in detail how my emotions and actions had been off that night, and how I’d been the one to throw myself on him.
When I got to how I was left feeling guilty this morning and ended up running off on Rhett, she paused me.
"Hold up. Something’s wrong here. This can’t be just an effect of your mate’s bond with him." She said matter of factly. I’d felt the need to tell her since she had more experience with mates and things related to that. Even though her mate proved to be a humongous dick. "I’m sorry to say Isleen, but this... This has ’aphrodisiac’ written all over it. From the way you threw yourself at him, to how you felt overwhelmed with guilt over the sex this morning. I’m just surprised that you decided to take an aphrodisiac. Don’t you find the Gamma attractive enough?"
I blinked rapidly as I felt my head spin. What. The. Fuck?
An aphrodisiac? All this time I’d been beating myself up with guilt, only to find out that it was all the work of a drug.
"Look at me, Lupe. Do I look like I’m capable of using an aphrodisiac, by my own will and consent?" I retorted sarcastically, causing the poor Lupe to blink awkwardly. But I continued anyway. "It’s becoming more obvious that someone put the substance in my food. I didn’t feel the way I did until after I’d left the house last night."
Lupe’s brows joined together in a frown, as she mused out loud. "But who could that be? Cullen and I were there all through during the cooking. And I doubt he was the one who did it. I mean, why would he want to?"
Honestly, why did Cullen do anything? The guy was unpredictable. But to my own surprise, I didn’t suspect him of doing this. I had a different suspect in mind.
Turning my gaze to Lupe, I recalled the malicious presence I’d sensed today to her. When I was done, she looked terrified, her mouth agape and her eyes threatening to bulge out.
"Holy moonlight, Isleen! You’re braver than me, for real. I can’t even imagine going through all that." She shivered, muttering a few other things that I wasn’t able to pick since I was deep in thought myself. But Lupe continued nonetheless. "Do you think this vampire has been lurking around just to mess with you? Maybe he’s the one who put the aphrodisiac yesterday."
And that was my main suspect too. But why? Why was this vampire out to get me? Had I done anything wrong when he was still disguised as Liam?
"Ugh. It just seems like every problem revolves around me, doesn’t it?" I chuckled wryly, rubbing my temples in frustration.
But trust Lupe to make an unserious comment. "I mean, it’s not that bad. It could be worse really. He could’ve done something worse, drank your blood or something. But Instead, you got yourself a secret admirer."
Secret admirer? Secret admirer my ass!
I knew the vampire was out for me. I could feel it and that was one of the reasons why I was on edge. I couldn’t let my guard down, not when the enemy was an ancient vampire capable of moving about In people’s skin under the sun.
"Anyways, I guess we should start looking forward to beginning classes. The pack’s schools have begun reopening after the attack but with a few stricter security measures." Lupe said with a sigh. Then she added. "Damn, I’m famished. You guys make anything to eat?"
Everywhere was dark. I couldn’t see a thing as I struggled to open my eyes. It was fruitless, just like many nights that I’d experienced this feeling. I knew what was coming next and tried moving my body to fight it. But it was no use either.
