The pack soldiers scurrying around the house were the only sound I was able to pick up as I sat there, staring blankly at nothing in particular. Some officers surrounded me, while one tried calming me down, as I watched them surrounding the building with yellow tape as a crime scene.
It was then that reality hit me. Lupe was... Dead.
I’d seen her body lying lifelessly on the floor, while her blood was splattered all around the house. She’d been missing an arm and a leg, and even in death, she still had this terrified look in her eyes that made me know that she’d gone through so much pain at the hands of her murderer.
When I’d screamed for help, some concerned passerby had come to support me while calling the pack’s officers. They were busy with their preparations for war, but still managed to show up.
I was lost. Scared. Overriden with guilt and sadness. Lupe didn’t deserve to die.
"Isleen!" Rhett’s voice suddenly bellowed from the entrance of the house, as he rushed towards me. "Everything will be alright." He muttered, wrapping his arm around me.
I didn’t even have the strength to protest or remind him that we were surrounded by people. I didn’t care.
Feeling Rhett’s arms wrapped around me like a warm blanket managed to make me whimper. Eventually, the tears that I thought I’d been doing a good job holding back poured out like a river.
I placed my face on his shoulder, sobbing to my heart’s content. I just couldn’t take it. Why me? Why Lupe?
"Lupe didn’t... Lupe didn’t deserve to d–die." I mumbled amidst sobs, but even I couldn’t pick up some of the words under his hold.
Luckily, the officers around us paid no heed to us and allowed me to mourn. I squeezed his arms, clutching to it like a life support.
"She didn’t deserve to die, Isleen. But none of it is your fault. I just want you to know that." He blurted silently while brushing my hair tenderly.
We sat there for several minutes and Rhett did nothing but hug me. He didn’t say anything, he didn’t even try to get me to stop crying. He just sat there, his strong arms wrapped around me, a reminder that he was always there for me.
Just when I’d begun sniffling back my snort and tears, an officer walked to us, looking down on me with pity. "Ma’am, I’m sorry but we’ll have to secure the area as a crime scene until we can gather more information about the murder." He paused, looking at Rhett for support.
He sighed before turning to me. "He’s right, Isleen. Let’s leave them to do their work. I’ll settle you in a hotel until the place is cleared." He whispered to me, again, not caring about the puzzled look of the officers
They were probably wondering why their Gamma was showing so much care to an Omega like me. Some of them who knew about my past relationship with Kylo were probably also wondering why he was so close to his son’s girlfriend.
To avoid their judgemental gazes, I squeezed myself out of Rhett’s embrace and stood up. As I walked towards the door, I took one final glance at Lupe’s dead body, which was now being covered by the coroner detectives.
Argh! Just go Isleen. Get out of there as fast as you can!
