Cullen gave Osmond one final look before stepping away.
Kylo was getting frustrated. For the moon’s sake, they were supposed to be a team!
Osmond had a wide grin on his face before he picked up the bag. "Woah. This thing is heavier than it looks." He blinked awkwardly as he strapped it to his back.
They all watched as the older wolf walked up to the starting line alongside other representatives of each team. They positioned themselves at the line, waiting for Rhett’s mark.
"One last thing." Gamma Rhett suddenly blurted, his voice stern. "For fairies, no wings or magic allowed. The same goes for elves using magic. Also, no pushing or playing rough. Anyone who breaks any of these rules shall have their whole team eliminated from the exercise."
The enlisted soldiers murmured among themselves while Kylo remained indifferent. Or at least, he tried to seem indifferent.
His gaze was intense on his father, as he watched him looking down on all of them. He knew that look all too well. It was a look that told him that no matter what any of them did, it would not be good enough before the Gamma’s eyes.
Hmph! He’ll show him. He’ll show him how wrong he was about him.
Just then, Gamma Rhett cleared his throat. "On my mark!" As he said that, all the representatives leaned forward, preparing themselves for the race. "Get set... Go!"
As soon as those words left the Gamma’s mouth, the representatives took off, running like their lives depended on it. Kylo and the others stood behind the starting line, preparing themselves to pick up the bags from their teammates when they ran back.
"So, who’s going next?" Celest asked meekly. He didn’t seem eager to be doing any of this.
"I’ll go." Cullen raised his hand with a smirk. Unlike the fairy, he seemed pretty excited to be doing this.
Which seemed weird since he was... Well, Cullen.
Kylo simply nodded in agreement before glancing at his father. His old man stood there on the stage, oblivious of his gaze or existence as he whispered something to Aceco.
They seemed to be having an important discussion.
The man had always been this way. Right from his childhood. For as long as he could remember, he’d focused most of his attention on his work while neglecting him.
Kylo never had a mother he could lean on whenever he felt unloved. He didn’t have a lot of friends growing up. How many people could be friends with the Gamma’s son anyway, when his father monitored his life like a hawk?
That was until he met Isleen. The first person he ever truly loved. It’d been crazy at first since they weren’t mates, but he had wanted to spend the rest of his life with her. He loved her, even after he broke up with her to shield her from the harsh judgment of the pack members.
And now? He’d found out that she’d been cheating on him way before they even broke up. With his father!
They’d both hidden it away from him for so long and he’d played the fool in their silly little games.
No wonder his father seemed cool with the idea of her staying at his place. He’d expected to argue with him before finally getting him to agree to it, but none of that happened.
"I don’t think I can do this," Celest muttered nervously, his voice getting shaky.
