Chapter 80: _ Dead Prisoners

Rhett

~~

After leaving Isleen’s place from questioning Liam, he had his mind in chaos. The rhythmic thrum of the car engine couldn’t drown out the persistent hum in his head. It wasn’t just the dull ache from the interrogation; it was the lingering memory of Isleen’s kiss.

That... that was a memory both sweet and unsettling. He knew he should be dissecting Liam’s words, searching for inconsistencies, for hidden clues, for whatever it was that was off about that boy. More so, if it all his words were to be trusted or reliable.

Yet, his focus kept slipping back to the touch of Isleen’s lips, the vulnerability in her eyes. And even her defiant to him. Nobody in the pack of her status could dare handle him in such a way. Not to mention the omega.

The fact that she could be defiant with him piqued his insteerst in her even more. He’d finally mark her tonight, and maybe then, the insistent craving within him would finally settle.

Now, focusing on the investigation, he couldn’t help but fear for their Ravenwood pack based on what he learned from Liam. It meant the fairies weren’t what they said they were.

It meant the fairies could kill too. If this got out, if the wolves found out that a fairy or maybe some fairies were hunting them down and eating their flesh, hell would break loose.

He could already picture the mess that would follow that. Hell, this information needed to be handled with care. Isleen’s boy must keep his mouth shut for now.

Yet, that boy had an aura to him that unsettled Rhett. Rhett was a master at reading people. Liam’s case was a whole new case on its own.

The pack was already on edge after the recent attacks, and this would only fan the flames of paranoia. Rhett slammed his fist on the steering wheel, frustration tightening his throat. The investigation into Mr. Fenrir’s death was going nowhere fast. Principal Thorne was a two-faced snake who was more concerned with reputations than the safety of his students.

Seeing how he had subtly tried to pin the blame on Isleen, Rhett shut his eyes and forced them open as he had to focus on the road.

The thought that Isleen would be innocently blamed sent a surge of protectiveness through him. Isleen might possess a stubborn, independent and fierce spirit. But she was as innocent of murder as a newborn pup.

He wouldn’t let anyone pin this on her, not Thorne, not the pack, not even a wayward son that she thought she had.

He needed a new strategy. Farkas was already scouring the official investigation files. Everyone in the preccinct were on the edge but something felt...incomplete.

His finely honed instincts that had been sharpened over years of leadership screamed at him. There was more to this than a simple fairy killing wolves.

And then there was Reed. If the boy truly was working with the vampires, who killed him? Why would the vampire murder their spy?

One thing Rhett thought was believable from Liam’s words was that Cora was suspicious. She was letting them in on lesser than she knew.

Questions kept on piling higher. They were all like a brick wall demanding answers. He’d break them, one by one.

The familiar building of the pack headquarters came into view as Rhett pulled in. The moemt he stepped out, soldiers who looked both solemnand respectrul, saluted him as he walked past.

Inside he found Alistair who rushed to him with greetings.

"Gamma Rhett, you’re welcome back, sir." frёewebnoѵel.ƈo๓
