**Chapter 311**

**Reven’s Pov**

As soon as I completed the blood donation for Vera, I slipped out of the pack clinic like a shadow in the night.

My head felt light, almost as if it was floating away from my body, while my limbs trembled with weakness. The world around me swayed, the edges of my vision blurring into a hazy fog. Yet, I pushed myself forward, driven by an urgency that drowned out my body’s protests. I couldn’t let Alpha Ethan see me like this—not now, not in this vulnerable state.

If he caught sight of me, a flurry of questions would erupt, questions I wasn’t prepared to face. They would dig deep into wounds I had barely begun to stitch up, reopening scars I had fought so hard to keep hidden.

*Are you sure this is a good idea?* my wolf murmured within the confines of my mind, her voice a soft whisper laced with apprehension. *You’ve lost a significant amount of blood. You’re not strong enough for this.*

I swallowed hard, the sensation dry and uncomfortable, as I stepped into the harsh sunlight. The brightness pierced through my eyelids like daggers. *I’m sure,* I replied with a steely determination. *Vera doesn’t get to leave this world yet. Not before I uncover the truth.*

*You could collapse,* my wolf cautioned, her tone grave. *You should rest. Heal.*

*No,* I responded, gritting my teeth as I felt a surge of defiance. *If I rest now, I’ll lose my nerve. I refuse to let her slip through my fingers again.*

Death was not what I wanted for Vera—not yet. It would be too easy, too merciful. What I craved was control; I sought answers that would allow me to confront her on my own terms, once I fully understood who she was and what she represented.

The way she had suddenly entered our lives, the air around her thick with an unsettling tension, felt calculated, almost toxic. Every instinct screamed danger.

As I staggered slightly upon reaching the road, I quickly raised my hand to hail a taxi before my knees could give way beneath me. The driver slowed down, a flicker of concern crossing his features as he glanced at me through the rearview mirror.

“Where to?” he inquired, his voice steady.

I named the eatery without a moment’s hesitation. It was a small, unassuming place, tucked away from the bustling main road—a sanctuary for those who wished to remain unnoticed. The private investigator had insisted on this specific location.

As the taxi pulled away, a tense silence enveloped my wolf, retreating into a watchful stillness. I leaned my head against the cool glass of the window, watching the pack house fade into the distance.

My heart thudded painfully against my ribcage, each beat a reminder of the strain I was putting on myself. Yet, fear propelled me forward, pushing me harder than any exhaustion could.

In what felt like no time at all, we arrived.

I paid the driver, my legs shaking as I stepped out and walked into the eatery. The aroma of fried food and freshly brewed coffee enveloped me, grounding me enough to stay upright.

My gaze swept across the room until it landed on him.

He sat alone at a corner table, his back firmly pressed against the wall, eyes sharp and keenly observant. At first glance, he appeared ordinary—dressed in a brown jacket, dark hair neatly combed, and no visible weapons.

But his gaze was piercing, missing nothing, not even the slight sway in my step as I approached.

I pulled out the chair opposite him and sat down slowly, mindful of the dizziness threatening to overwhelm me. Without wasting a moment, I reached into my bag and retrieved the thin file I had clutched like a lifeline.

“This is everything I know about her,” I stated, sliding the file across the table. My voice remained steady, though my body was anything but. “I need to know more. Everything. So I can decide how to handle her.”

He nodded once, his expression inscrutable, and opened the file. His eyes skimmed over the pages with practiced ease, absorbing every detail without interruption. The fact that he didn’t ask questions reassured me; I had chosen the right person for this task.

After a brief silence, he closed the file and met my gaze. “I’ll do a perfect job,” he assured me calmly. “If there’s something to find, I’ll find it.”

A wave of relief washed over me, brief yet intense. I stood up, ignoring the way the room seemed to tilt. “Good,” I replied firmly. “Because people get hurt if this goes wrong.”

A slight twitch of his lips hinted at amusement, but he held his tongue.

I exited the eatery with urgency, my instincts screaming that lingering would be a grave mistake. Outside, I hailed another cab and directed the driver back to the pack house.

Now, my head throbbed painfully, each pulse echoing the tension that coiled tightly within me.
