I went to my room and shut the door behind me, leaning against it for a moment as I released a l felt tight, my thoughts tangled and restless.
Everything that had happened earlier the file, Vera’s threats, and Ethan’s silence kept replaying couldn’t shake off.

I crossed the room slowly and sat on my bed, reaching for the history book I had picked up from the library earlier that day. I hadn’t even been sure why I chose it. Maybe I just needed something, anything, to distract myself. Something solid. Something that didn’t breathe, threaten, or break my heart.
I opened the book and tried to focus, but the words blurred together almost immediately. My mind refused to cooperate. Every sentence I read dissolved into images of Vera’s smiling face, her whispered threats, and Ethan standing there asking me for peace as if my fear was an inconvenience.
I snapped the book shut and tossed it aside.
Peace.
How could he ask for peace when my children’s lives were hanging in the balance?
A soft knock came at the door.
“Come in,” I said flatly.
The door opened, and a young maid stepped in, her head bowed respectfully. “Miss Reven,” she said gently, “dinner is ready. The Alpha and the rest of the family are waiting for you.”
My jaw tightened.
“Go back,” I replied coldly. “Tell Alpha Ethan that I’m not coming”
The maid hesitated. “But”
“I said go,” I snapped.
She flinched slightly, nodded, and quickly left the room.
I lay back on the bed, staring at the ceiling as anger simmered beneath my skin. I didn’t want to sit at the same table as Ethan and his precious mate, pretending we were some perfect family.
I didn’t want to watch Vera smile sweetly while knowing exactly what kind of poison she carried in her ve
A few minutes passed.
Then the door swung open without warning.
I didn’t need to look to know who it was.
Alpha Ethan wheeled himself inside, his expression dark, his presence heavy and commanding. He shut the door behind him with a firm click.
“Why didn’t you come down for dinner?” he asked.
I sat up slowly, meeting his gaze without fear. “Because I don’t want to see the disgusting face of you and your mate.”

His eyes flashed dangerously.
“Watch your mouth,” he warned.

I laughed bitterly. “Or what? You’ll order me to smile and play family while the woman you call your mate threatens my children?”
“That’s enough,” he growled.
I stood up, crossing my arms over my chest. “I said I’m not coming. You can’t force me.”
His lips curved into a humorless smile. “I’m the Alpha. I can force you.”
Before I could react, he rolled closer, grabbed my wrist, and pulled me toward him. I struggled instinctively, but his grip was firm.
“Let go of me!” I snapped.
“You’re coming downstairs,” he said coldly. “You won’t embarrass me in front of the pack.”
I yanked my hand free. “You already embarrassed yourself the moment you chose her over us.”
That struck something raw in him.
He stood up abruptly, abandoning the wheelchair, and towered over me. “Enough, Raven. Get dressed properly and come with me. Now.”
My wolf snarled, but I swallowed my rage and turned away, grabbing a shawl before storming past him. If he wanted a performance, then fine. But I would not stay silent.
We walked downstairs in tense silence.
The dining hall was already full. The children sat quietly at one end of the table. Elders, guards, and pack members filled the rest. And at the head of the table sat Vera, looking radiant, composed, and smug.
Her eyes flicked to me, and a slow smile spread across her lips.
I wanted to claw it off her face.
“Ah, Raven,” Vera said sweetly. “I was worried you wouldn’t join us.”
I ignored her and took my seat beside my children, pulling them close instinctively.
Dinner began, but the atmosphere was thick and uncomfortable. Every sound–the clinking of cutlery, the murmured conversations–felt too loud.
Vera leaned toward Ethan. “You look tired, my Alpha,” she said softly. “You should rest more.”
I clenched my fists under the table.
“I’m fine,” Ethan replied stiffly.
Vera’s hand slid onto his arm possessively, and something inside me snapped.
“Get your hands off him,” I said sharply.
The room fell silent.
Vera’s eyes widened in mock surprise. “Excuse me?”

You heard me,” I said, my voice steady but deadly. “Don’t touch what isn’t yours.”
Ethan slammed his hand on the table. “Raven!”
She turned to him, tears already glistening in her eyes. “I was just being caring. Why does she hate me so
