An hour walk through the forest and the men each have a few kills, the thrill of the game keeps them eager and excited, while the rest of us women are left with no choice but to trail after them.

Tired, cold and still flashing false smiles and keeping up perfunctory conversation.

At least they are. I’m completely zoned out of the event and at this point, I don’t even care if I do a terrible job and word gets back to Grandfather Blackwood.

He only said I had to be a substitute. No one says I even have to be a good one, right?

In the short time I’ve spent with the women, it’s obvious Sarah has warmed her way into their hearts as a pure hearted and gentle Luna.

Personally, I couldn’t care less.

The snow is thicker this far into the forest and my boots sink deeper in with each step. They’re solid lightweight leather but being this long out in the snow and they’re beginning to weigh enough to become annoying.

I’m beginning to wonder if Sarah set the mall on fire herself to escape this, because there’s absolutely nothing fun about accompanying a bunch of top Alphas to a staged hunt.

Where we act like most of them didn’t already set up game at strategic locations to increase their kills and make their tracking look more excellent than it is, prior to the event.

Cameron’s brows furrow slightly, his nose twitching as he glances around us.

Do you smell that?He asks me, leaning over.

We haven’t spoken much since the first kill. We don’t need to.

Cameron has adamantly stuck close to my side regardless of how many times the other Alphas urged him to participate more.

Every now and then, he sneaks a glance my way, whenever he thinks I’m too distracted to notice him.

While it made me uncomfortable at first, I hate to admit I might be getting used to it.

To his stares, and the longing in his eyes he struggles to hide.

But I keep reminding myself to be cautious. It might turn out he’s only doing this because Grandfather Blackwood specifically left orders.

Cameron’s the nice guy. But his sinceritythat is something I’ve never been able to figure out.

How much of what he does is genuine? How much of it is an act? How much of our marriage was true?

It couldn’t have been much, seeing as he tugged the rug from underneath my feet barely a few months in.

I shake off the thought, being around Cameron is stirring up unpleasant memories.

He’s the reason Kael brought me back, but I’m not sure I want to be a part of this anymore.

I pass him a questioning look. What smell?

The forest smells like any forest would. Moss and earth, there’s also the smell of blood in the air from the kills.

At least to me it does.

Smells like a storm is coming.” He murmurs thoughtfully, It won’t be good to get caught in it. The storms out here are terrible.

Oh don’t bother, Cam.Alpha Tyler calls out to us from a few paces ahead, Dane checked and everything before picking the date. There will be clear skies all day. Trust me.

Cameron frowns at Tyler’s interruption but nods slowly.

We finally arrive at the first rest stop, or more accurately, a mini lounge.

It’s a clearing with a wooden shack with a grill already prepared, and some lounge chairs. There’s an entire team of chefs waiting out under the shelter and I’m not even the least bit surprised to see them.

All five Alphas here are literal billionaires. There’s absolutely no way they would clean the kills, or roast it themselves.

Here,Cameron gestures for me to take a seat, passing me a bottle of water.

I noticed your pace slowed down and you’ve been shivering more.He murmurs, You have to lace your boots tighter at the top if you don’t want the chill to seep in.”

I roll my eyes at the lecture. Look, CamI’m saying but the words die on my tongue as Cameron crouches down to unlace and relace my boots.

Don’tI protest, tugging my leg away but he merely grabs my ankle and puts it back in place, his grip firm but gentle.

I’m not about to take you back with a frost bite.He asserts in a light tone, I won’t be able to explain my way out of that.

I glance around and unsurprisingly, more than a few eyes are on us.

This scene between a sisterinlaw and her brotherinlaw wouldn’t have raised brows, except that everyone knows we were once married.

Don’t you realise you’re drawing attention?I hiss in a voice audible to only us both.

He glances up at me, his expression almost pained. Is that what you think I’m doing? Drawing attention?

His hand slowly trails up the side of my boot to linger on the skin peeking just above, his eyes still fixed on

  1. me.

My heart twists ever so slightly. What is hedoing?

Maybe you’re used to that with Kael. But that’s not meyou know that it isn’t.His tone is barely audible, With meit’s different, Lails…”

My fists clench at the name only he calls me, and the tone he says it with is almost a drawl.

Don’tjust don’t.” I reply firmly, pulling my leg away from his hold.

This time, he loosens his grip and lets go.

Kael’s not hereneither is Sarah,Cameron’s eyes are still fixed on me, And maybe they shouldn’t be.”

Maybethings should be the way they used to, before them

It’s odd for Cameron to make a reference to Kael. He mostly avoids mentioning his existence.

It’s even more disturbing that he’s reminiscing the past.

I stand up quickly and walk over to the tree line before he can say anything else.

Cameron doesn’t follow.

I exhale a breath of relief, putting some distance between me and the rest of the group.
