Next Man, Better Plan novel Chapter 149

After hanging up, she dialed 911, called for an ambulance, and gave the dispatcher Victoria's address.

She'd done all she could. After all, she wasn't a doctor; rushing over to Victoria's place wouldn't have helped anyway.

The traffic was heavy, and by the time her car pulled up in front of the Ironhold Investment Group building, an hour had passed.

Just as Stephanie was about to enter the building, her phone rang again.

It was Victoria’s number, but this time it was Quennel’s voice on the line. “Victoria's in the hospital. Did you do this?”

Stephanie was stunned into silence.

“The doctors say she might lose the baby,” Quennel continued. “Stephanie, you owe Victoria a life.”

Hearing this, Stephanie exploded. “How could I possibly owe her a life? Quennel, don't be so ridiculous!”

“I don't want to argue about this over the phone. Just come to the hospital and see for yourself.”

After the call ended, Stephanie stood in silence for a moment. She glanced up at the Ironhold Investment Group building, then decided to hail a cab and head to the hospital first.

But when she arrived outside the hospital room, Stephanie froze.

Where were the supposed stab wounds? Victoria was lying perfectly fine in a maternity ward bed, an IV in her arm, with not a drop of blood in sight.

She'd suspected all along that Victoria’s call for help was a trap.

After all, the man Victoria accused was just a local troublemaker, the kind who was only brave behind closed doors. Stab Victoria and then run? That was attempted murder, a serious crime. He wouldn't risk it unless he had a death wish.

Inside the room, Victoria was sobbing uncontrollably in Quennel’s arms. “Quennel, the baby... it's gone. I’ll never be a mother now...”

Stephanie frowned. “How did you lose the baby?”
