Next Man, Better Plan novel Chapter 64

Quennel’s face darkened completely. He felt like he had been played by the person closest to him.

Joseph was waiting at the mouth of the alley. When Stephanie emerged, he asked, “Can I give you a ride home?”

Stephanie’s refusal was swift. “No, that’s alright. I couldn’t ask you to be my driver every time.”

She knew Joseph meant well, but she didn’t want to drag him into her mess.

Joseph rubbed his nose. “It would be my honor to be your driver. Are you sure you won’t give me the chance?”

Initially, Joseph’s impression of Stephanie was that she was beautiful, free-spirited, and his cousin’s best friend.

But after hearing her exchange with Quennel, he found his cousin’s best friend to be rather interesting.

Giving her a ride home was on his way anyway; his own house was in the same direction.

Stephanie thought for a moment. “Alright, but I’ll transfer you thirty dollars for gas.”

Joseph raised an eyebrow. “Why thirty?”

Stephanie reasoned, “Because a cab ride home costs thirty dollars.”

Joseph laughed. So she really was treating him like a driver?

A new emotion flickered in his eyes. “I thought after that huge sum you just received, you’d be a rich woman. I was expecting at least a hundred.”

Stephanie’s expression froze for a second, her long lashes fluttering. A smile touched her lips as she joked, “In that case, I’d better take a cab.”

Her eyes were clear and bright, her face as small as a palm, framed by her sea of waist-length hair that made her skin look like porcelain.

Joseph felt a pang of regret for turning down Cecilia’s suggestion that he marry her on the spot. He couldn’t believe he’d let her marry some unknown man.

He had missed his chance. This adorable girl could have been his wife.

From behind, Quennel watched Stephanie get into Joseph’s car and drive away. He slammed his fist against the wall.

He immediately called Julie. “I need you to run a background check on someone. The license plate starts with…”

Julie was efficient. A few minutes later, she called back.
