Next Man, Better Plan novel Chapter 65

Stephanie leaned against the car window, watching the city lights blur past.

The vibrant neon signs cast a kaleidoscope of shadows across her face. Her long, wavy hair spilled over her shoulder, and the gentle breeze made fine strands dance in the air.

When Joseph stopped at a light and glanced over, his heart skipped a beat. In that moment, Stephanie was breathtakingly beautiful.

“He’s the one who doesn’t know how to appreciate you. It’s his loss,” Stephanie murmured, as if to herself.

How could she not care? They had over twenty years of history between them.

Joseph could see the pain she was trying to hide. “Want to grab a drink?”

Stephanie shook her head. “My place is just at the next intersection. Besides, can’t you tell I’m already drunk?”

She cupped her cheeks and tilted her head, her nose slightly red. She was nodding off, little by little.

The alcohol was hitting her now, and her face felt warm. The two or three glasses of red wine she’d had were well over her limit.

Joseph smiled. At least she was a pleasant drunk.

The upscale apartment complex had strict security. Since Joseph’s car wasn’t registered, he couldn’t drive in.

Stephanie noticed and scanned Joseph’s payment QR code. “Thirty dollars. Here you go, driver.”

Joseph looked into her eyes, which were flushed from the wine. “Not even going to add me on WhatsApp before you go?”

Stephanie took a deep breath, turned back, and stared at him for a few seconds, a look of confusion in her eyes.

“Do I know you? Why would you want to add me on WhatsApp?”

Joseph was speechless.

She was more than a little drunk; she didn’t even recognize him anymore.

“Can you walk on your own? Do you need me to see you inside?” he asked, concerned.

Stephanie shook her head, her voice as light as a spring breeze. “Drivers don’t provide door-to-door service.”
