Downstairs in the living room, Jonathan was sitting on the sofa.
Steven stood beside him. “Sir, Ms. Jackson messaged me again this morning. I told her you were still on your business trip.”
“Good.”
“I don’t think this is a sustainable solution… After all, your ‘business trip’ will have to end eventually. Ms. Jackson seems quite eager to get the divorce finalized. She’s been asking me about it almost every day, even while on vacation.”
Jonathan’s gaze turned cold, his tongue pressing against the back of his teeth. “And whose fault is that? Isn’t it because you told her I was a domestic abuser?”
Steven fell silent. Jonathan stretched his legs. “In any case, just keep stalling for now.”
Steven asked, “Until when?”
“Until she forgets she ever wanted a divorce.”
Footsteps echoed from upstairs. Both men turned in unison to see Stephanie slowly descending the spiral staircase.
Their eyes met. Jonathan’s expression changed. He looked at Steven. “Why is she back? Didn’t you say she had at least another week?”
Steven shook his head, bewildered. “I just confirmed with her this morning…”
Jonathan understood immediately. He had been staying here all this time, thinking he had plenty of time before Stephanie returned, and had let his guard down.
From the looks of it, Stephanie had played him.
In the time it took them to speak, Stephanie was standing before them.
Her brow furrowed as her gaze fell on his face. “Jonathan, I think you owe me an explanation. Why are you in my house?”
The pointed emphasis on “my house” made Jonathan raise an eyebrow. Unflustered, he offered a polite, shallow smile. “What a coincidence. Your house is my house.”
She should have guessed it sooner. Mr. Vasquez was Jonathan.
“Why is my flash-marriage husband you?!”
“If I said it was a coincidence, would you believe me?”
Stephanie plopped down on the sofa opposite him, fuming. “What do you think?”
She had always thought she was the one getting the better end of this marriage deal. Now, it seemed that might not be the case.
