On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 1

Just hours after her morning electroshock treatment, someone arrived to discharge Jessica Brown from the psychiatric hospital.

She stood at the entrance, the bright summer sun a harsh assault after six months of sunless confinement. She couldn’t help but squint, her eyes struggling to adjust.

Across the street, the tinted window of a gray Aston Martin lowered slowly, revealing the god-like profile of Lance Smith.

A lump formed in Jessica’s throat, and her eyes burned crimson.

She didn’t move.

Lance’s gaze shifted to her, his voice as cold as ice. “Jessica Brown, has half a year not been enough to teach you obedience? Get over here.”

Jessica stared at the man she had loved for fifteen years, watching the storm of anger gathering in his eyes. A tidal wave of grief crashed within her, but she forced it back down, swallowing the bitterness.

She was done. She had finally let go.

Starting today, she would no longer love him.

The Lance Smith she had loved was gone, rotted away the day Catherine Brown walked back into their lives.

Her face a blank mask, Jessica pulled open the passenger door. The first thing she saw was the seat, draped in a fluffy, bubblegum-pink cover with an embroidered label: *Princess Catherine’s Throne*.

A wave of dizziness washed over her, and her legs gave out. Her stomach churned violently.

She needed to be sick.

Jessica stumbled to the side of the road and doubled over, vomiting until only bitter bile came up. The force of it brought tears to her eyes, stinging her cheeks.

It was so disgusting.
