On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 111

Jessica left the law firm.

As she rounded the corner, the intern, Anne, ran out after her. "Wait a moment!"

Jessica stopped, curious.

"It's not that we don't have enough lawyers," Anne said, catching her breath. "Forgive me for asking, but is your husband a very powerful man?"

"Yes," Jessica nodded.

The intern lowered her voice. "I shouldn't be telling you this, but an order came down from your husband. Any firm that takes your case will be making an enemy of him. We just don't dare."

Jessica stood there, stunned.

"You're trapped in an unhappy marriage," Anne said sympathetically. "I feel for you, but I'm just an intern. I can't do much. I just wanted to let you know so you don't waste your time at other small firms. No one will take your case."

Jessica's eyes welled up. "Thank you for telling me."

The intern shook her head. "We're both women. It's nothing. My mom fought for three years to divorce my dad, and he was just an ordinary guy. I can only imagine how hard it is for you."

"Thank you, really," Jessica said. "Now I know what I'm up against."

An idea suddenly struck Anne. "You could try Thompson Law Associates! The founders have serious connections. Their fees are astronomical, but you can apply for their pro bono service on their website. A top-tier lawyer will handle your case for free. The catch is they only take one or two cases a week, and the spots are harder to get than an appointment with a top specialist."

Jessica knew that no matter how powerful Lance was, he couldn't influence the Thompsons. They were her best bet.

She looked up their fees. A non-pro-bono case required a five-million-dollar retainer.

Did this mean poor people couldn't even afford a good lawyer anymore?

She checked the pro bono schedule; it was booked solid until next year. Still, clinging to a sliver of hope, she put her name on the waitlist. You never know, someone might cancel.

That evening, Jessica went to Willowbrook Gardens to do some cleaning. The house still contained leftover renovation supplies that Kevin Brown had bought to remodel for Catherine, a project that never started. Jessica carried the cans of paint out to the yard to have the property management dispose of them.
