Melissa shot Catherine a teasing look. "You just got here, and Mr. Smith is already chasing after you. It seems he really can't bear to be apart from you for a second."
A shy smile graced Catherine's lips. "What are you talking about? Lance is probably here for something else."
Melissa quickly climbed out of bed, and the two went downstairs together. Lance Smith was sitting in the living room.
"Catherine, you're here too," he said, a hint of surprise in his voice.
Catherine nodded with a smile, though her mind was racing. He didn't know I was here? So he didn't come for me? Daniel had specifically called for Melissa. Could it be that Lance was here to see her? About Jessica?
Catherine dug her nails into her palm.
Once they were settled, Melissa asked, "Mr. Smith, what brings you here?"
"I heard about what happened yesterday," Lance said softly. "I'm here to apologize on Jessica's behalf."
Melissa faltered, instinctively glancing at Catherine.
Catherine smiled encouragingly. "Why are you looking at me? Lance and Jessica are husband and wife. It's only right for him to apologize when she does something wrong. Melissa, just think of it as Jessica apologizing to you in person."
Think of it as Jessica herself? Melissa knew exactly what to do.
She sat up straight and cleared her throat. "Mr. Smith, since you know what happened, you must understand how deeply I was humiliated. I've never been so embarrassed in my entire life."
Melissa paid no mind to her brother's embarrassment. "Don't think I don't know you've had a crush on her for years. If Mr. Smith hadn't married her back then, you were going to ask Mom and Dad to propose!"
Lance's expression grew darker by the second.
"Mr. Smith, don't listen to her childish rambling," Daniel said hastily. "They used to fight all the time when they were kids, and it was usually Melissa's fault, so I'd scold her. She got it into her head that I liked Jessica. I only see her as a little sister, nothing more."
"I know," Lance said, his tone flat. He turned his gaze back to Melissa. "What do you want Jessica to do?"
A triumphant smile spread across Melissa's face. "I was humiliated in front of everyone in The Kensington, so I want her to be humiliated in front of everyone in The Kensington. She will kneel at the entrance and crawl all the way to my front door to apologize."
