After being shut down by Jessica, being stonewalled by a mere property manager was the last straw. Lance's face darkened with fury. "Do you have any idea how easy it would be for me to get you fired?"
The manager looked torn. "Sir, these are the rules. Please don't make this difficult for us. How about this? I can call Ms. Brown on your behalf and ask her. Would that work?"
Lance was speechless. He turned on his heel and stormed away. Why was he wasting his time chasing after a woman like Jessica Brown? He drove straight to his office.
…
Jessica spent the day working alongside Emily Gray. It was exhausting but incredibly fulfilling. Emily was a brilliant boss and an impressive woman. Jessica knew that if it weren't for the career setbacks caused by childbirth, Emily would never be working at such a small company. She was eager to learn everything she could from her.
Emily, in turn, was very fond of Jessica. She was hardworking and resilient, a stark contrast to Emily's initial impression of her.
Three days after she started, Emily took Jessica to her first client dinner. As they were about to enter the private club, Jessica spotted Melissa Gates talking with some friends. Melissa's eyes caught sight of Jessica, and she froze, watching intently as Jessica followed Emily inside.
"I see an old friend," Melissa told her companions. "I'll just go say hello."
She trailed after Jessica, waiting until she and Emily had entered a private room. Melissa crept closer, peeking through a crack in the door. What she saw made her eyes light up. She pulled out her phone and made a call to someone she knew inside.
A man quickly came out.
"Melissa, what are you doing here?" he asked as she beckoned him from around a corner.
"Lawrence," she said, "who are those two women who just went in?"
"They're a product manager and an employee from a live-streaming company," Lawrence Harris replied. "They're here to talk business. You know them?"
Melissa bit her lip. "Lawrence, the pretty one… we have a history."
He smiled. "Don't you worry. I know what to do. Are you eating here?"
"No, I'm just hanging out with friends nearby," she said.
"Alright, you go have fun. Leave this to me."
Melissa nodded happily and left. Lawrence straightened his collar and walked back into the private room.
"Mr. Harris," Emily said with a professional smile, "I'm the product selection manager for StreamSphere. We were hoping to discuss commission rates and discounts with you."
Lawrence picked up his glass. "Business can wait. Ms. Gray, let me first propose a toast to you both."
"Oh no, Mr. Harris," Emily interjected quickly. "It should be me toasting all of you. To everyone here, thank you for giving us this opportunity."
