On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 143

Robert Harris was silent for a long time, his fingers drumming a restless rhythm on his knee. Finally, he spoke. “Jessica Brown, for your mother’s sake, I’ll accept your deal. You will bury what you know about Lawrence and Melissa, and I will leave the George family alone.”

A wave of relief washed over Jessica. “It’s a deal, Mr. Harris.”

He grunted. “Your mother would never have resorted to such underhanded tactics.”

“That’s why you were friends with my mother,” Jessica retorted coolly, “and not with me.”

Her response seemed to catch him off guard. After a moment of stunned silence, he stood up and left without another word.

Not long after, Jessica’s phone rang with an unknown number. When she answered, she was met with a torrent of curses from Melissa Gates.

She hung up immediately.

A moment later, Emily Gray from the room next door stopped by to say goodbye.

“Emily, are you sure you’re well enough to be discharged?” Jessica asked with concern.

Emily sighed. “My sister-in-law called. My mother-in-law fell ill after going home, and now there’s no one to look after my son. I have to go back. Don’t worry about work, I’ll let them know you’re taking more time off.”

“Okay,” Jessica said.

Emily patted her on the shoulder. “I’ll see you soon.”

As Emily walked away, Jessica called out, “Emily, have you ever considered hiring a nanny? If your salary can cover the cost, it might be the best solution.”

Emily paused at the doorway and turned back. “You know, I was just thinking the same thing.”

With Emily gone, Jessica felt a growing urge to return to her apartment at The Kensington. She had been trying to call George, but his phone went straight to voicemail every time. A knot of anxiety tightened in her stomach. She knew that even though George was highly valued by his boss, Mr. George, he was still just a bodyguard. The rest of the powerful George family might not be so forgiving. If she went to them and took full responsibility, perhaps they would lessen his punishment.

Jessica’s breath hitched. Seeing the question in her eyes, Nathan sighed and decided to tell her everything. “Arthur George is furious. George admitted to everything, and Arthur is so angry he’s threatening to disown him.”

“What… what kind of discipline?” she asked cautiously.

“Thirty lashes in the family chapel, followed by three days and nights of kneeling.”

Jessica’s brow furrowed. “But isn’t that a punishment reserved for family members?”

Nathan hesitated. “George grew up in that household. He’s like a brother to Mr. George. They call him a bodyguard, but he’s treated like family. That’s why Arthur is punishing him this way. The point is, he’s alive, but he’s kneeling in the chapel. You won’t be able to see him even if you go.”

Jessica was speechless.

“Besides,” Nathan added, “you’re still married to Lance Smith. If you show up pleading for George, Arthur will assume he’s been sleeping with a married woman. At that point, not even Mr. George will be able to protect him.”
