The property manager watched George, increasingly certain that he was no ordinary man. He quickly stepped forward again. “I’ll have my team clean Ms. Brown’s apartment right away.”
George nodded.
“Would you two like to wait in the management office?” the manager offered, trying to be helpful.
George shook his head and got back into Nathan’s car. He shot Nathan a look.
“Okay, I heard about what was happening,” Nathan said quickly, “but I didn’t look into it. I was in a tough spot. If I told you, your grandfather would have my head. If I didn’t, my conscience would eat me alive. So, I decided to just ignore it.” He paused. “You know Lance Smith released the divorce papers, right?”
George nodded.
“This is great news for you!” Nathan said, grinning. “Lance finally agreed to a divorce. In a month, it’ll be final, and Jessica Brown will be a single woman. You can pursue her openly without being labeled the other man.”
George glared at him.
Nathan shrank back a little. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s the truth. Chasing a married woman is a bad look. You can’t blame your grandfather for being angry.”
A few minutes later, Frank Ward called. He told George that Rebecca Jones had picked Jessica up.
Nathan overheard and looked worried. “Aren’t those two mortal enemies? I remember when we were kids, no one in The Kensington dared seat the Joneses and the Browns at the same table. Jessica and Rebecca were like oil and water. Now that Jessica’s in trouble, you don’t think Rebecca would take this chance to kick her while she’s down? Maybe she took her somewhere to beat her up? You know how vicious women can be when they’re jealous.”
Knock, knock, knock.
“Come in,” said Gabriel Brown.
Catherine entered, holding a glass of milk. “Mom warmed this up for you. She said you seemed upset and was worried you’d be up all night thinking. This should help you sleep.”
Gabriel took the glass with a small smile. “Thank you. I appreciate it.”
Catherine sat on the sofa and watched as he unwrapped his gift. “What did Mrs. Smith leave you?” she asked curiously.
