On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 209

In Amy’s mind, Catherine Brown was her real mother. Tearing her away from Lance and Catherine now would only backfire.

But it was clear that the encounter had soured Jessica’s mood. She tossed and turned all night, unable to sleep until the early hours of the morning.

The next day, Rebecca called to tell her they probably weren’t going to get StreamSphere. The George Group had started to aggressively outbid The Smith Group and was poised to win.

“It’s okay,” Jessica comforted her. “With our skills and capital, we can just start from scratch if we have to. Weren’t you going to look for office space? You can focus on that, and I’ll start researching the operational side of a streaming company.”

“Better The George Group gets it than Lance,” Rebecca said, trying to find a silver lining.

Jessica agreed completely.

George was discharged from the hospital, and with nowhere else to go, he temporarily moved into her house in Willowbrook Gardens. Jessica, however, was still staying with Rebecca.

“Why would you move back?” Rebecca argued. “With George living there and you living there, it’s like you’re a married couple. What’s that all about? Listen to me, stay here. After a while, he’ll realize it’s awkward and move out on his own.”

“George is a good person,” Jessica defended him.

Rebecca snorted. “You think everyone’s a good person. Just listen to me. Besides, are you really willing to spend the rest of your life with a bodyguard?”

“I don’t have any prejudice against his profession,” Jessica said calmly. “But I’m not thinking about my personal life right now. I just want to make money, get stronger, and see if I can win back custody of my daughter.”

Hearing this, Rebecca didn’t have the heart to dash her hopes, even though she privately believed Amy was already too far gone under Catherine’s influence to ever be truly on Jessica’s side again. But for now, it was what drove Jessica, so she let it be.

Time flew by. A month passed in a blur after they had filed for divorce. The day to receive the final decree arrived.

She hung up, pacing back and forth, wondering what game he was playing. After a moment’s thought, she dialed Aaron James.

He answered instantly. “Mrs. Smith.”

Jessica didn’t bother correcting him. “Tell Lance Smith to get to the Divorce Registration Office within the next half hour. Today is the day we get the decree. What is he doing?”

“I’m very sorry, Mrs. Smith,” Aaron said apologetically. “We had an unexpected business trip abroad. We’re at the airport now, and the plane is about to take off. You’ll have to wait until he returns.”

Fury flared in Jessica’s chest, and her voice rose. “Why couldn’t he have told me sooner? And you’re telling me he couldn’t spare thirty minutes to finalize a divorce?”

If they were at the airport, the plane hadn’t left yet.
