Jessica arrived early at the kindergarten.
Five minutes later, Lance pulled up with Amy. He was dressed in a sharp black suit, his hair perfectly styled—the very image of a top-tier executive. He immediately drew stares as he got out of the car.
Ignoring the attention, he opened the back door and unbuckled Amy from her car seat. She wore a frilly princess dress and carried a small backpack adorned with a picture of Elsa, complete with lace trim. Her sparkling shoes completed the look.
Amy’s face was sullen as Lance held her in his arms.
Jessica walked over. “Amy, look, none of the other kids are being carried. Why don’t you get down and walk by yourself?”
“Just because no one else is doing it doesn’t mean it’s wrong,” Amy retorted.
Jessica was momentarily speechless.
“I’m being unique,” Amy declared. “Mommy Catherine says I’m a special princess, and princesses are supposed to be carried by their knights.”
Jessica’s expression hardened, but she kept her voice patient. “Today, you’re a kindergartener, so we need to follow the kindergarten’s rules, okay? See that little sign on the door? It says we should walk by ourselves.”
Amy pouted.
“Get down and walk,” Lance said gently. “Show everyone your pretty shoes.”
Amy nodded obediently and slid out of his arms, taking his hand. “Daddy, is Mommy Catherine really not coming?”
“The phone number you provided on the enrollment form is yours, correct, Mr. Smith?” Ms. Scott asked. “We have a group chat for parents. I’ll add you, and I’ll post any important announcements there.”
Lance agreed.
“Great,” Ms. Scott said brightly. “I’ll take Amy to her classroom now. If you two could wait here, someone will be along shortly to take you to the parent interviews. It won’t be long.”
After Ms. Scott left with Amy, Lance turned to speak to Jessica, but she had already turned her back to him, facing the wall.
He stood there, a grimace on his face. She would rather stare at a wall than look at him.
Soon, a staff member came to lead them to the interviews. A couple was waiting ahead of them.
