On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 27

“Who’s asking for me?” a sultry voice purred from behind her.

Jessica turned. The woman, Laura, exuded a natural allure. She wore a wine-red slip dress that dipped just low enough to reveal elegant collarbones. She looked to be in her early thirties, a perfect blend of sophisticated and sexy.

Laura’s eyes lingered on Jessica’s face. “You’re the one who called earlier?”

Jessica nodded.

Laura couldn’t seem to tear her gaze away. “Come with me.”

She led Jessica up to a second-floor office. “What’s your name?”

“Jessica Brown.”

Laura paused, then chuckled. “Did you see the news today? That Mrs. Smith they were talking about seems to share your name.”

“That’s me,” Jessica said quietly.

Laura’s fingers trembled, dropping a bit of cigarette ash onto the back of her hand.

“Then why are you here, doing this kind of work?”

“I need to survive.”

“Just being nosy, but you’re giving up the life of a wealthy housewife to become a bottle girl? If your family finds out, they’ll probably tear my club apart.”

“I’m getting a divorce, and my family has washed their hands of me. I can do whatever I want.”

Laura tossed a folded outfit to Jessica. “Alright. Give it a try tonight. If you can handle it, you can start officially tomorrow. Hours are five p.m. to two a.m. Base pay is eighteen hundred a month, but it’s all about the commission.”

Jessica was surprised it was that easy. She held the clothes, unsure what to do next.

Laura raised an eyebrow. “Go change. Then I’ll show you the ropes.”

In the restroom, Jessica put on the outfit. It was a bunny girl costume. The skirt was shockingly short, barely covering the tops of her thighs on her tall frame.

A flicker of interest crossed Laura’s face. She circled Jessica, then flagged down a passing male server, taking his tray of drinks and handing it to Jessica.

“You wanted to try?” Laura said with a challenging smirk. “Here’s your chance.”

The tray was heavy, but Jessica held it steady. “Okay.”

Laura gave her an encouraging pat on the shoulder and went about her business.

The night went surprisingly well. The two rooms Jessica served were a class reunion and a birthday party. They weren’t big spenders, but they were respectful and safe. In total, she sold three thousand dollars’ worth of drinks, earning a hundred and fifty in commission. Added to her sixty-dollar base for the night, she’d made two hundred and ten. She could survive on that.

At two in the morning, as Jessica was leaving, Laura glanced at the sales report and then gave Jessica a long, meaningful look. Just as Jessica braced herself for a reprimand, Laura simply waved a hand.

“Go home and get some rest. See you tomorrow.”

Jessica felt a wave of relief wash over her.
