On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 299

Lance lowered his head, feeling the weight of her words. For his aging grandmother, for his young daughter… he was convinced.

He left The Kensington without another word.

The next day, Jessica stood outside the courthouse. As before, she waited for over an hour, but Lance was nowhere to be seen. She watched the time on her phone tick by, second by agonizing second, her heart sinking with anxiety. If he backed out again, they would surely be blacklisted, making a future divorce even more difficult.

Finally, at eleven-thirty, just as the office was about to close for lunch, Lance’s car pulled up across the street.

Jessica stood up quickly.

He approached her, his suit rumpled and creased. She frowned for a second before smoothing her expression. All that mattered was that he was here.

“The office is still open. Let’s go,” she said, nodding curtly.

Lance looked at her eagerness, a sarcastic smile touching his lips. “Are you that desperate to be divorced?”

Jessica took a deep breath, ignoring his tone. “Let’s be clear. If you hadn’t backed out last time, I would already be a free woman. You are the one who wasted another month of my life, Lance.”

He stopped, watching her walk ahead. “Are you so eager to be free so you can be with Anthony George?”

Her steps faltered. She turned back. “Let’s just get this over with.”

Lance started walking again, each step heavier than the last. He knew that with every step he took toward her now, he was actually moving farther away. This moment, standing side by side, would be the last time they were ever this close.

He paused at the door, lowered his head, and closed his eyes. “Fine.”

He had no choice but to retreat. The car pulled away, its surface brushing past his hand as it disappeared down the street. He stared after the license plate until his vision blurred.

For a long time after that, Lance didn’t see Jessica.

Isabella and Catherine began pressuring him about the wedding. He didn’t care anymore. Marriage? Fine. Catherine was carrying his child, and he was divorced from Jessica. What did it matter?

Both the Smith and Brown families began preparing for the wedding with great enthusiasm.

One afternoon, Amy sat on the front steps, looking up at Karen. “Karen, are Daddy and Mommy Catherine getting married?”

Karen nodded. “Yes, dear. Now you’ll have one more person to love you.”
