On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 302

The tension in the air was suffocating, threatening to unleash a tidal wave. “George,” she began, her voice strained, “I consider you a friend, and I truly want you to be happy.”

“Then be with me,” he said simply. “That would make me happy.”

Jessica fell silent, utterly floored.

After a long moment, George suddenly stood up and gave the back of her head a light, playful pat. “I’m kidding. Look at you, scared speechless. Stay in touch. I’ll get to the bottom of this.”

She nodded emphatically.

“I’ll see myself out,” he said, heading for the door. “No need to walk me out. Just make sure you lock up.”

Jessica watched his tall, imposing figure disappear from view and let out a long, slow breath. She sank back into the plush sofa, letting it swallow her whole.

For the next few weeks, Jessica didn't see or hear from Anthony George. Life was quiet.

That Friday evening, she called Lance to ask if she could take Amy out for the weekend, but Amy refused. It stung, but Jessica respected her daughter’s decision. She ended up spending the next two weekends with Rebecca Jones.

Rebecca’s family was in chaos. Her father’s illegitimate son had gotten himself into some serious trouble and was now in police custody. Her father, finally full of regret, had been begging her to come back, but Rebecca wouldn’t budge.

Later that night, as Jessica helped a stumbling Rebecca out of the bar, she ran right into Lance Smith.

His eyes widened in surprise. “You’re here, too,” he said, stepping toward her.

Jessica gave a curt nod. “Excuse us.”

He moved to follow her. “The nanny told me you wanted to take Amy out last weekend, but she said no. If you want to see her this week, I can bring her to you.”

Jessica shook her head, not breaking her stride. “That’s not necessary. Amy is old enough to make her own decisions. I trust you’ll take good care of her. As long as I know she’s okay, that’s enough.”
