On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 51

Jessica didn’t want to talk about it anymore.

Laura changed the subject, smiling as she clapped Jessica on the shoulder. “Don’t worry about the damages from the other night. Someone already paid for everything. And those two expensive bottles of champagne you sold? I logged them for you. You’ll get your full commission.”

“Thank you, Laura,” Jessica said gratefully.

Laura just patted her shoulder again. She could tell from Jessica’s demeanor that she wouldn’t be working at the bar for long. She wasn’t one of them. The bar was Laura’s life, but for Jessica, it was just a temporary port in a storm. They were just two ships passing in the night, and if Laura could help a little along the way, she was happy to do it.

“Go on, get to work.”

“Okay.”

Jessica spent the rest of the night selling cheap drinks, but the evening was quiet and uneventful, which was a relief. She left a little early to catch the last bus. As she sat on the rattling vehicle, she realized she had nowhere to go but George’s apartment.

She got off at his stop and took a deep breath before riding the elevator up. She knocked on the door, but there was no answer. After trying a few more times, she concluded that he wasn’t home.

With a sigh, she slid down the wall and sat on the floor outside his apartment. She was so tired that, before she knew it, she had fallen asleep.

She woke up in a bed.

Jessica rubbed her eyes and stumbled out of the bedroom, drawn by the smell of frying eggs. Her stomach rumbled.

She padded quietly to the kitchen doorway. “George? What time did you get in last night?”

“Around three,” he said without turning around.

Dressed in his slippers and with no makeup on, Jessica looked like a young woman barely out of her teens. “Are you always this late?”

“Depends on Mr. George’s schedule,” he replied, his voice raspy with the morning.
