Back then, she was just like Amy is now—a princess at the center of everyone’s world.
“Mommy, I found the slippers!” Amy shouted happily.
Jessica wiped a tear from her eye and turned with a smile. “That’s wonderful, sweetie.”
Amy slipped on the oversized slippers, waddling like a duck. “Look, Mommy, I can’t even walk properly!”
Jessica pulled her into a tight hug.
“What’s wrong?” Amy asked, surprised.
Taking Amy’s hands, Jessica asked softly, “Amy, if Mommy and Daddy have to separate, who would you want to live with?”
Amy frowned. “I want to live with Daddy and Mom Catherine.”
The words were like a punch to the gut, twisting Jessica’s heart into a painful knot. She managed to keep her voice gentle. “But Mommy would be very lonely. I really want Amy to stay with me.”
Amy looked down at the floor. “Then can’t we all just live together? Daddy, Mommy, and Mom Catherine.”
Jessica felt a wave of despair. “Amy, you used to say you loved Mommy the most.”
Amy fidgeted with her hands, looking guilty and refusing to meet her mother’s eyes.
Jessica held her little hands tighter. “I know it’s my fault, sweetie. I wasn’t there to take care of you for the last six months, and she was. It’s only natural that you like her. But I’ll always be your mommy, and I want to take care of you just like I used to. I want to be your best friend in the whole world. Can you give me another chance?”
Amy’s little face was a mess of confusion. “I don’t know.”
Jessica hugged her again. “It’s okay if you don’t know. No matter what, Mommy will always love you very much.”
Amy slowly nodded.
