On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 73

“I’m not sure,” Catherine replied. “Dad was talking to Jessica alone for a bit. I don’t know what they said. You should ask him.”

“Alright,” Isabella said.

After hanging up, however, Isabella did not go upstairs. She was smarter than that. Her astuteness was the very reason she had managed to secure her position after the first Mrs. Brown passed away. Men like Kevin Brown were highly sought after; even young women in their twenties were eager to become his second wife. Isabella had triumphed over them not with her looks or their shared history, but with her ability to read people and, most importantly, to be impeccably discreet.

Elizabeth Bailey had been Kevin’s wife and Jessica’s mother, but in many ways, she had also been his teacher. Kevin had loved Elizabeth, but he had also feared her. Isabella’s gentle, unassuming nature offered him a sense of respect and ease that he had never known. That was her winning card.

So, she wouldn’t follow her daughter’s advice and confront him now; it would only make him resentful. She made a mental note to teach Catherine a few things. She herself had never been able to defeat Elizabeth in life; she’d had to wait until her rival was dead to claim Kevin. But Isabella was determined that her daughter would triumph over Elizabeth’s.

That afternoon, Kevin finally came downstairs.

Isabella approached him, her voice soft. “Kevin, would you like something to eat?”

He shook his head and grabbed his car keys.

“Are you going out?” she asked.

“Yes.”
