Susan, seeing an opportunity to mend fences, quickly turned to Amy. “Amy, sweetie, why do you like Catherine so much?”
Amy pouted. “Because Mom Catherine lets me eat chocolate, ice cream, and hamburgers. And she takes me to do fun things, like riding on the pirate ship and the Ferris wheel. Mommy never lets me do those things. She says they’re too dangerous, but lots of other kids get to do them.”
Susan clapped her hands and looked pointedly at her grandson. “See? Do you get it now? Jessica was just trying to keep Amy from eating junk food. Is that wrong? And as for rides like the pirate ship, the amusement park has clear height requirements. Amy isn’t tall enough yet. I don’t see how Jessica did anything wrong.”
Lance sneered. “Rules are meant to be broken. You don’t raise a child by following a manual.”
“So in your eyes, that woman can do no wrong?” Susan said, exasperated.
“The results speak for themselves,” Lance replied coldly.
His words silenced her. Jessica remained quiet.
Susan waved a dismissive hand. “Fine, I can’t meddle in your affairs. But let me make one thing clear: Jessica is your wife your grandfather chose. Even though he’s been gone for years, only she is fit to carry that title in this family.”
Lance mumbled a grudging agreement.
