On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 8

“Okay, Grandma,” Jessica managed to say.

Back at Lakeview Heights, Amy was playing with a toy train on the floor. She looked up at her father. “Daddy, is Mom Catherine feeling better yet? I miss her.”

Lance set aside his laptop and beckoned his daughter over. Amy scrambled onto the sofa and settled into his lap. He looked at her face, a perfect miniature of Jessica’s, and gently pinched her cheek. “You miss Catherine?”

Amy nodded solemnly. “Lots and lots.”

Lance let out a cold snort. He had no idea what kind of mother Jessica had been. When she was first sent to the institution, Amy had never once asked for her. Yet Catherine had only been around for six months, and Amy was already inseparable from her.

Jessica had been a failure as a mother.

Thinking of her made him wonder what she was doing now. How could she possibly survive without him and the Brown family fortune?

He set Amy down. “Go play.”

“But when is Mom Catherine coming back to play with me?” Amy whined, clinging to his leg.

“We’ll go see her tomorrow on our way back from your great-grandmother’s house,” he said firmly.

Amy cheered and went back to her train set. Lance walked to the French windows, his gaze falling on the string of shimmering lights Jessica had hung in the yard before the new year. He found himself dialing Aaron James.

“Find out what Jessica Brown is doing right now.”

Half an hour later, Aaron reported back.
