On the Ruins of His Regret I Soar novel Chapter 92

Jessica nodded and left, leaving Catherine alone with Susan.

"Jessica and Lance grew up together," Susan began, her voice soft. "Lance always treated her like his own sister, even closer than his cousins. He was always taking her out to play."

Catherine's lips thinned.

"He used to sleep over at the Brown estate all the time, and Jessica and her cousins often stayed with us. There are nine families in the Kensington community, but ours were always the closest. We arranged their marriage when they were just children." Susan continued, her tone still gentle. "I shouldn't have to tell you all this. You would have known, of course. You were working for the Brown family with your mother back then. You must have seen them together often, right?"

Catherine remained silent.

"I have always considered Jessica my granddaughter-in-law, and I always will," Susan said with a sigh. "You're a smart girl. To be honest, your mother is very clever too. If you weren't, you wouldn't have gotten to where you are today."

Catherine dug her nails into her palms.

Susan's gaze swept over her. "I know you're in love with Lance. But I will never, ever allow him to divorce Jessica."

Catherine's hands fell open. She looked up, meeting Susan's gaze. The fifty-year age gap between them melted away as they stared at each other, all pretenses dropped.

"You're right, Susan," Catherine said, her throat tight. "I love Lance. But I have never wanted to destroy his marriage to Jessica. I just want to be by his side, as his confidante."
