Oops I Banged the CEO novel Chapter 144

The interrogation took place in the car—clearly a spur-of-the-moment decision. Both the driver and the man in the passenger seat were bodyguards, their imposing presence making the whole atmosphere tense and heavy.

Tracy sat there pale as a sheet, answering each question as it came. She was clever, though—she only admitted to asking Yvonne to pay the hospital bills, claiming ignorance about everything else.

As for why John had a key to her family’s house, she explained that he was her cousin. Their families lived close by, so it was convenient to have a key for coming and going.

Throughout, she played the part of the innocent bystander, cooperating fully—hardly the image of an accomplice.

In the end, she even stammered out a nervous question: “Are you...debt collectors?”

The entire exchange lasted barely three minutes. Yvonne listened to every word.

“Do you think she was telling the truth?” Marico pocketed his phone and fixed his calm, dark eyes on Yvonne’s delicate, fresh face.

“Did Jason or John say whose idea it was?” Yvonne suddenly found herself unable to meet Marico’s gaze. She busied herself with the towel wrapped around her damp hair, pretending to dry it.

“No. They just said it was to get back at you.” Marico couldn’t bring himself to say what he’d heard about their motives.

He tried not to dwell on it—the idea that a beautiful girl like her, one who didn’t even care for her own mother, had endured so much growing up in a family like that.

“But I heard them say outright it was for money.” Yvonne paused, towel in hand, her brows furrowing as she began to really think it through.

Marico stood straight, head bowed, his deep black eyes never leaving her. His voice softened as he called her name. “Yvonne.”

“Yeah?” She finally looked up, their eyes locking. For a fleeting second, it felt as if an electric current ran through the air. Suddenly flustered, Yvonne broke eye contact, her heart in chaos.

It was just a glance, but he’d completely unsettled her.

Her gentle, composed face had regained its usual resilience.

Marico watched her for a few seconds, then nodded. “Alright, something simple. And after, you’ll spend the evening with me, yeah?”

Yvonne bit her lip, cheeks pink, and nodded shyly. “Okay.”

Marico looked as if he wanted to say more, but Yvonne didn’t give him the chance. She slung the towel over the back of a chair and darted out the door. “I’ll go make the pasta!”

With that, she turned and hurried off, her steps light and quick.

Marico tilted his head, watching her flustered retreat with a helpless smile.

She looked like someone confessing their feelings for the first time—awkward and bashful. How on earth was he supposed to coax her back?
