“Don’t touch me!” Yvonne jerked her head away, her eyes cold as ice as she glared at John.
“So what is it now? Couldn’t pay off your gambling debts, so you tried to sell me off for some wedding money, and when that didn’t work, you come to blackmail me instead?”
All these years, her so-called father gambled compulsively, while his wife splurged on designer bags and cosmetic surgeries. To them, she and her mother were nothing more than an ATM—whenever they needed cash, it was always to patch some gaping hole they’d dug themselves.
This time, their tactics were even nastier. Clearly, the amount they wanted was bigger than ever.
Robin’s face twitched, caught off guard by her sharp words, but he refused to back down. “I’m still your father, whether you like it or not.”
Yvonne turned on her heel, walked into the living room, and pulled out a chair at the dining table. She sat down with perfect composure, her face frosty as she stared down the seven people perched on the sofa.
“Fine. Let’s settle things once and for all, right here, right now.” Her voice was calm and even; she sat tall and unyielding, utterly unfazed by their numbers.
Robin, emboldened by the presence of his brother’s family—all four of them—and his two troublemaking nephews, immediately started posturing.
“Alright then, let’s do the math. You’ve lived under my roof for eleven years. That’s no small expense. Let’s say, conservatively, five thousand dollars a year. Over eleven years, that’s fifty-five grand.
Add in your high school and college tuition—another fifteen thousand. That’s seventy grand in total. I won’t even bother with the smaller stuff. Pay us back, and from now on, we go our separate ways.”
Robin’s face was twisted with anger, his tone domineering.
Seventy thousand dollars—just like that.
Yvonne scoffed. “Five thousand a year? Have you ever made that much in a year? Since the day my mother married you, how much have you actually earned?
My high school tuition was free, and I paid for college with student loans. I worked part-time to cover my living expenses. How dare you claim you paid for my education?”
Yvonne forced herself to keep her temper in check, her voice icy as she shot back.
