Yvonne let out a soft laugh.
She’d been working for two years now—every paycheck went either toward paying off her student loans or helping her mom with household expenses. All she ever wanted was to make life a little easier for her mother.
Who could have guessed she was just feeding a nest of leeches?
Grace stood up to pour herself some water. Spotting Yvonne, she called out teasingly, “Hey, Yvonne, feeling better? I thought maybe you’d hit it off with that blind date and that’s why you took the day off.”
“Oh please, Grace. Our Yvonne’s such a straight-laced workaholic. Like she’d ever skip work—and risk losing her perfect attendance bonus—just for a guy.”
“True enough,” Grace agreed with a grin.
Nydia, never one to let a topic go, changed gears. “So? Any progress with Mr. Blind Date?”
“Total mama’s boy,” Yvonne replied, a wry smile on her lips. “Wants his future wife to help pay for and renovate their house before marriage. Preferably pops out a son, too.”
“Dream on!” Nydia scoffed, rolling her eyes. “He looked all prim and proper in those old yearbook photos, but now? Greasy, balding, and so damn sneaky.”
“That’s just his college picture. These days, he’s a total slob,” Yvonne said, shaking her head. “I know blind dates are a gamble, but I didn’t think I’d be rolling the dice blindfolded.”
“What a complete loser,” Nydia sneered, then her eyes lit up as she turned to Yvonne with a sly wink. “Listen, sweetheart, let me set you up with someone from our sister branch—the art director, no less.”
“Thanks, Nydia, but I’ll pass. Work is the only thing on my mind,” Yvonne cut her off without hesitation.
“You’re already in your late twenties,” Nydia teased, shameless as ever. “You really ought to get out there and live a little. Don’t let that gorgeous face and killer figure go to waste!”
Yvonne ignored the whole lot of them, chalking it up to their usual antics.
She washed out a mug, filled it with hot water, and threw herself back into her work.
As the end of the workday approached, her phone buzzed with a string of messages—then the calls started coming in, one after another.
