“Yeah,” Marico replied, swatting Yvonne’s hand away as she reached for the elevator buttons. He pressed the ‘close doors’ button, then smoothly selected the top floor. “What floor are you going to?”

“Twenty-six,” Yvonne answered, her nerves betraying her as she started chewing her lower lip—a nervous habit she’d never managed to break.

She was biting so hard a faint mark had already appeared on the inside of her lip, but she didn’t loosen up for a second. Her whole body felt like a wound-up spring, and inside, her anxiety was about to burst.

After punching in 26, Marico slid his hands into his pockets and leaned back. His gaze shifted to Yvonne, his tone deep and unreadable. “We’re perfectly legal. This isn’t some secret affair.”

Yvonne’s lashes fluttered as she tried to steady her breathing. “I’m just a little nervous. I’ve never done anything like this before,” she admitted quietly.

It was the truth. From the moment their paths crossed to getting married, not even two days had passed. The gap between their positions was enormous, and he was her boss. The whole thing felt too sensitive, too precarious.

Marico’s dark eyes lingered on her. He gave a slow, almost teasing smile. “Everyone’s a first-timer at marriage.”

Yvonne fell silent. If only she had nerves of steel like his.

She was about to reply when the elevator stopped on the first floor and a few employees stepped in. Yvonne immediately retreated to the far corner.

Everyone inside greeted Marico politely. “Good morning, Mr. Hamilton.”

He nodded, expression cool and distant—his aura making it clear he was unapproachable. No one dared stand near him; they all squeezed toward Yvonne’s corner instead. Yvonne, already feeling shaky, was nearly pushed off balance by the crowd.

Suddenly, a strong arm wrapped protectively around her waist.

Yvonne froze, turning her head ever so slowly. Marico, without her noticing, had moved next to her—and was now holding her close. She nearly screamed on the inside. Why on earth would he do this in front of everyone?
