Yvonne had been in a bit of a mood all morning, throwing herself into her work just to keep her mind off things.
Grace, meanwhile, had just come back from HR. She kept glancing down at her new ID badge, trying—and failing—to hide her grin.
“Congratulations to our new director, Grace!” Nydia piped up suddenly, mischief sparkling in her eyes.
That’s when Yvonne noticed Grace had returned.
“Well done, Grace! Climbing the ladder, I see. From now on, it’s Director Grace to us!” Yvonne clapped enthusiastically.
Grace beamed. “Thank you, everyone. Honestly, I owe this promotion to Yvonne’s lucky streak. Lunch is on me today—what do you say?”
The office erupted in cheers.
“Sorry, I’ve got plans,” Anna, Linda’s assistant, replied coolly without looking up.
The team wasn’t large to begin with, but there was a clear divide: Anna and most of the group backed Linda, always eager to flatter her and curry favor, hoping to leverage her connection with their boss, Marico. Yvonne, Grace, and Nydia, on the other hand, just focused on their work and had little patience for office politics.
“Well then, let’s not keep anyone. Yvonne, Nydia, shall we?” Grace suggested.
“I’m in!” Yvonne replied right away.
Nydia looked equally delighted. She leaned in, whispering something in Grace’s ear. Whatever it was made Grace nod in agreement.
“I’ll make a reservation at that place next to the office—the one with the fancy chef. They give us a discount with our company ID.”
Grace grinned.
“Classic Grace, always thinking of the little perks. No wonder you’re the boss I look up to,” Nydia teased, then drifted off into one of her daydreams.
“Hey, do you think Mr. Hamilton’s complete lack of scandal means he’s into men? I mean, have you seen that guy’s presence? He’s got real king energy,” Nydia blurted out.
Yvonne, in the middle of taking a sip of water, choked so badly she nearly dropped her glass.
“Pffft—cough, cough!” She patted her chest, cheeks flushing bright red.
