“Hey, I heard there was some trouble outside just now. Is everyone alright?” Marico’s calm, steady voice filled the elevator.
Though he asked all three of them, his gaze lingered on Yvonne, who stood with her head bowed, looking thoroughly dejected.
“I’m fine,” Yvonne replied quietly. “I just worry this might cause bad press for the company.”
“There’s no policy here that says we don’t stand by our own. I’ll get to the bottom of this,” Marico replied, voice firm.
Grace and Nydia exchanged a glance at his words.
“Mr. Hamilton, you’re incredible! Honestly, having a boss as decisive and protective as you must be the best luck any of us at Hamilton Group could hope for!” Nydia chimed in enthusiastically, giving Marico a big thumbs-up.
Seeing how upset Yvonne was, Marico’s expression softened. “You’ve had a rough time. Take the rest of the afternoon off. That’s an order,” he said.
“It’s alright, really, I’m fine. I don’t need to go home,” Yvonne tried to protest.
“This is a special perk, just for you. You deserve some rest after what happened. Go home, relax, get some sleep.”
“Yeah! And since you’re not living at home right now, where are you staying?” Nydia jumped in, her bubbly nature taking over as she tried to cheer Yvonne up. “How about we go shopping or catch a movie this weekend?”
Yvonne hesitated, clearly unsure how to answer. “I... I’m sharing a place with a good friend. Maybe we can plan for the weekend.”
Yvonne had never been one for small talk, and she was a terrible liar. After she replied, her eyes darted nervously, not sure where to look.
Marico glanced down at her anxious figure just as the elevator doors opened. He reached out and pressed the “open” button, his tone gentle but direct. “We’re here.”
With the CEO himself holding the elevator, Grace and Nydia didn’t dare linger. They quickly linked arms with Yvonne and ushered her out.
Back at her desk, Yvonne barely had time to take a sip of water before Grace and Nydia were already packing her bag for her.
“Go home and get some rest,” Grace insisted.
“Yeah, take care of yourself,” Nydia added.
Yvonne gave a soft nod. “Thank you. Don’t worry, I’ll be alright. You two should get back to work.”
