Yvonne finished gathering her things and headed down to the parking garage, keys jingling in her hand as she made her way toward her little car.
Just as she pressed the unlock button, a faint yelp caught her attention from beneath the car.
She crouched down to take a closer look.
Curled up under the chassis was a tiny, filthy white puppy, soaking wet and shivering.
The stray’s wide, wary eyes locked onto Yvonne, and it let out another anxious yelp.
“Hey, easy there. I’m not going to hurt you,” Yvonne said softly, her voice gentle and coaxing.
The puppy huddled tighter beneath the car, trembling all over, those big round eyes never leaving Yvonne’s face.
For a few moments, the two just stared at each other in silence.
The little dog had stopped barking, but its body was still tense, shivering in fear.
Yvonne’s heart twisted with sympathy.
“You wait here, okay? I’ll go get you something to eat,” she promised, not really sure if the puppy could understand.
She slipped on a mask and hurried back into the building, heading straight for the cafeteria. She bought a small bowl of plain chicken broth, something light and nourishing.
When she returned, the puppy was still beneath her car. Yvonne opened the container and gently slid it under the car. “Here you go. Eat up—this’ll warm you up.”
The puppy must have been starving. After a hesitant sniff, it crept forward and began to lap up the soup in hungry gulps.
It finished the bowl in no time.
With its belly full, the puppy seemed a little braver. It trotted right out from under the car, tail wagging, and pressed itself against Yvonne’s legs, eager for attention.
Yvonne’s heart melted.
She knelt down and reached out to pet it, her movements careful and slow.
The little dog wagged its tail even harder, clearly delighted—so easy to win over with a meal.
“Did you hurt your paw?” she asked, noticing the pup was limping slightly.
