She’d always imagined that if she ever had a dog, things wouldn’t be so awkward or dull during the days spent with Marico. After all, a pet could fill the silences, make life a little brighter.

As they neared the gated community, Yvonne spotted Marico’s sleek black Bentley up ahead. She followed behind and flashed her headlights to catch his attention.

“Mr. Hamilton, Mrs. Hamilton is behind us,” William, Marico’s assistant, noted, glancing in the rearview mirror. He figured he should keep Marico informed.

Marico slipped a ring box into the pocket of his tailored suit, his expression unreadable.

Both cars pulled smoothly into the garage, one after the other.

Marico was the first to step out. He moved with his usual composed elegance, not looking back.

Yvonne parked, her heart practically skipping with excitement. She hurried to the passenger side, opened the door, and gently scooped a small puppy into her arms.

“Mr. Hamilton, look! I found a puppy. Can I keep her?” Yvonne beamed at Marico, cradling the wriggling ball of fur with visible delight.

The man in the crisp suit, usually so calm and collected, froze the moment he saw Yvonne with the puppy. His sharp features tightened, his eyes suddenly cold and wary.

Yvonne’s smile faltered as she caught his reaction. The joy on her face faded, replaced by a nervous bite of her lip.

“I’ve already given her a bath, got her vaccinated, everything. The vet said she’s healthy and clean…” Her voice, once cheerful, grew small and uncertain.

Marico was the type who wouldn’t even allow a phone near the bed at night and had a near-obsessive streak for cleanliness. He probably wasn’t a pet person.

The more she thought about it, the more anxious she felt. She clung to the puppy, unsure and helpless, watching Marico’s face for any sign of approval.

The puppy, tongue hanging out, just panted and grinned in her arms, oblivious to the tension.

Marico’s frown deepened, his voice low and dark. “Where did you even find such an ugly dog?”
