Listening to Jane's words, even though the couple knew they were the truth, they couldn't help feeling more heartbroken.
Jane looked at the faces of Mr. and Mrs. White, paused for a moment before continuing, "Uncle, you really need to start thinking about what to do. It's evident that your third brother is trying to push you out. If you let him take over, all the effort you've put in your whole life will go to waste!"
Jane expressed great worry and urgency, leading Gilbert to believe she was genuinely concerned about him.
He couldn't help but think that all the affection he had shown her over the years was finally being reciprocated.
So, he sighed helplessly and said, "I'll think of something." In the worst-case scenario, he will ask Ariana for help. He won't let the company fall into the wrong hands, for sure.
As for Ariana...
Indeed, he had been neglecting her as a father all these years. Perhaps he should let her take the role of the chairman for a while. If she proves to be capable, she can continue. He also needs to reconsider the matter of shares. Maybe his previous decision really did break his daughter's heart. On reflection, his decision indeed seemed unfair.
If Jane and Kiara held two-thirds of the shares, then Ariana's position would definitely be unstable.
That would easily breed resentment among the sisters.
His plan was to split the company's shares into four parts, with Ariana holding half and Jane and Kiara each holding a quarter. With this arrangement, Ariana would not be wronged, right?
He couldn't possibly leave Kiara and Jane with nothing in the future.
His daughter wouldn't be so heartless.
However, what he didn't know was that Ariana had completely given up on him. Her previous declaration of not wanting a single share was not made in anger but a deliberate decision. From now on, whether the White family grows stronger or gradually declines, it has nothing to do with her, Ariana.
Seeing her husband sighing, Georgia also sighed, without uttering a word.
At this point, Jane could no longer contain herself. She slowly said, "Uncle... I have an idea, but... I don't know if I should say it.”
Gilbert was energized. He was both surprised and eagerly anticipating a pleasant surprise from Jane. He quickly said, "Speak up. Say any ideas you might have. If you voice them, there might be a chance to solve the problem. If you don't say anything, there definitely won't be a solution." Gilbert was very happy, thinking that Jane's initiating this conversation proved she had grown a lot since before.
Having ideas was always better than having none.
This showed that she was genuinely thinking hard about solutions rather than being the same incapable decision-maker she used to be.
That would be a taboo no matter what the company was.
It proved that the employee was not competent.
But since Jane was his niece, he had no choice but to lower his requirements a bit and teach her how to grow slowly. Seeing that she dared to voice her opinions now, he was, of course, overjoyed.
But what Jane said next froze the smile on Gilbert's face.
She glanced at her husband, then at Jane, her beloved daughter of many years, and let out a sigh. She slowly spoke, "Jane, I know you're thinking about your uncle. It's okay; we won't overthink it. We once considered adopting you, but then we thought that it doesn't change much. After all, we've loved and cherished you as our daughter since the beginning. The formality of adoption can be quite trivial. We know that your heart is aligned with ours. Your uncle will give this matter a good thought; don't stress over it. Things will always find a way."
In fact, Georgia was relieved that her husband hadn't immediately agreed.
Ever since her husband had shared their daughter's complaints over the years, she'd felt like something was stuck in her heart; the feeling was suffocating and complicated.
She had thought their daughter didn't mind before.
Now it seemed the daughter cared greatly, even to the extreme. These years, she must have been suppressing her emotions. While Georgia felt her behavior as a sister was unjust, she was still her daughter, and Jane's actions had indeed gone too far. Even though Jane had changed now, she couldn’t expect her daughter to forgive her, too.
Moreover, she agreed that her husband's previous decision of share distribution didn't seem appropriate. It would indeed be challenging for Ariana to manage the company in the future. So, she felt a sense of guilt deep down.
Especially since it's been more than half a year, and their daughter hasn't visited even once.
She couldn't help but feel a little panicky and insecure.
She was afraid that her daughter might completely spite her because of this. After all, she was her own flesh and blood. She didn't realize it before as she was always focused on pitying the parentless Jane. But now that her daughter wasn't home, she felt an emptiness.
Seeing that her husband didn't agree immediately, she felt a genuine sense of relief.
Because she knew if her husband agreed, Ariana might completely sever their parent-daughter relationship.
