Beverly harbored an intense hatred for Arnold and his parents—a loathing so deep it consumed her.
In the past, she had concealed her feelings, but now she no longer cared. Every ounce of her resentment spilled out unrestrained, the venom in her glare sending an involuntary chill down Arnold’s spine.
Finally, Arnold's father seemed to realize something.
No longer content to stand by indifferently, he stepped in to stop his wife and son. Then, with a kindly yet helpless smile, he said softly, "Beverly, Arnold acted rashly just now. But he was just too upset. All young couples have their disagreements, but divorce shouldn’t be the first thing you turn to. Of course, most of the blame lies with Arnold."
Arnold froze at the sight of his father’s uncharacteristic expression.
He opened his mouth to speak, but his father, anticipating his next move, cut him off with a sharp, silencing glare.
Cowed by his father’s warning, Arnold immediately clamped his mouth shut.
Khloe, too, seemed to grasp her husband’s intentions. In an instant, her demeanor shifted. She hurried forward, her face etched with concern as she examined Beverly’s cheek. "I was just too worked up earlier," she cooed. "I only didn’t want Arnold to divorce you—after all, little Alvin is still so young. Does it hurt? Tell me what you’d like to eat later, and I’ll make it for you."
Beverly stared at their fawning expressions, her lips curling into a cold smirk as she remained unmoved.
The eldest uncle pressed on, "Beverly, you and Arnold are husband and wife. Arguments are inevitable, but you shouldn’t let trivial matters ruin your bond. And besides, you have a child together."
Beverly’s face was icy. "Get to the point."
The eldest uncle stiffened. For a brief moment, his expression darkened. Though he had fallen on hard times, he wasn’t accustomed to being dismissed so bluntly.
Now, having his daughter-in-law treat him with such disdain nearly made him lose his composure.
However, the hardships of these past days had tempered his patience. Though displeased, he showed no outward sign of it. Instead, he said, "Since you're married to Arnold now, Beverly, naturally you should stand united as husband and wife. It was wrong of Arnold to hit you this time. When the Lawrence family comes to fetch you, we'll go back with you to apologize to your parents."
At this point...
Arnold finally understood what his parents were getting at.
In an instant, the earlier displeasure on his face vanished without a trace, replaced by eager anticipation and excitement.
If they could return home, that would be the best possible outcome—
Even if his grandfather still refused to forgive their branch of the family, with the Lawrence family's backing, they wouldn’t have to endure this wretched life any longer. For Arnold, this was nothing short of a godsend. Without waiting for his parents to say more, he stepped forward himself, offering an ingratiating smile. "I'm sorry, Beverly. I acted rashly just now. Don’t be upset. If you're angry, hit me instead. Don’t let it harm your health."
He was willing to pay any price to go back—
The eldest uncle studied her expression before continuing, "Of course, if you and Arnold truly have no feelings left, we elders won’t force you to stay together..."
Beverly caught the underlying meaning in her father-in-law’s words. Though fury burned inside her, she forced herself to ask, "What do you want?"
A smug smile crept onto the eldest uncle’s face. "Since the child will remain in our care, you’ll naturally have to pay child support, along with a divorce settlement. If you hand over one billion, Arnold will grant you the divorce."
One billion would be more than enough to secure their future. No matter what, the eldest uncle refused to continue living like this, crammed into a place smaller than the Stone family’s bathroom.
If Beverly wanted to leave, fine—but not without paying up. Did she really think she could walk away scot-free?
At the mention of the sum, Beverly looked ready to tear someone apart. She glared at her father-in-law, her voice dripping with venom. "One billion? Do you expect me to rob a bank? I don’t have that kind of money. And let’s be clear—the child isn’t even in your custody. They’re staying at the Stone estate. I’ll give you fifty million, and that’s my final offer. Take it or leave it."
Fifty million was something her mother could scrape together. After all, her mother had once been the chairwoman of the Lawrence Group—she definitely had the means.
In the past, Beverly would never have tolerated such extortion. But now, she was desperate to sever ties with Arnold, even if it meant losing fifty million.
Unfortunately, the eldest uncle wasn’t having it. The eldest uncle pondered for a moment before countering, "At least five hundred million. Otherwise, forget about divorcing Arnold. Hand over the money, and I’ll approve the divorce immediately."
Beverly stared at the three shameless figures before her, her rage boiling over. Without another word, she turned on her heel and stormed off, slamming the bedroom door behind her.
